how to remove valve springs on 4g63 n/a

the correct way to remove your valve springs would to be use a valve spring compressor and remove the valve locks this is going to free the valve, valve spring, retainer and valve oil seal. you can rent this tool from most automotive stores. If you don't want to rent it you can turn the head upside down having someone hold it and you a hammer and a socket to release the valve locks but in doing this you risk needing new retainers.

As long as the valves are not bent, using the hammer method should work. I have never damaged a stock retainer using this method. I don't even use a hammer I just use a long extension with a socket and give it a quick jot of hulk force and it will compress the spring down far enough to pop out the keepers. You will feel the spring compress when you are close to pushing hard enough.

If the valves are bent, you will need the tool if they are bent to hell. I had to bring it to the shop and they ended up cutting the valve heads off to relieve the pressure.

Check out vfaq on how to make your own tool.

Search for jjrock5 on YouTube. I have a video on how to do this with an awesome tool.

Good luck

Nice video. That is the same tool that I posted in the link. One cool thing about the tool is that you can use it with the head on if you are just changing the valve seals or the springs (obviously if you are pulling the valves you will need to remove the head).

yeah...just pull the head buy a 5/8s deep socket cut a hole in it and weld it to a clamp and compress it that way....not hard ignore the hammer method...u dont wanna crack a head

in fact heres my tool i used to rebuild my head took me 10 min with it
