I just finished wiring up a HKS type-1 Turbo Timer on my 1g and I had to continually search and ended up using about 4 separate posts to piece it all together. So I decided I would assemble it all into one post with some pictures from the install and the color coded ecu pinout diagram that was a huge help. The other information came from a post by lancer54 which was also a huge help. So here is a step by step of how I installed my turbo timer. Use this post at your own discretion. I strongly recommend that those attempting this install have prior experience with wiring!
First off here is Lancer54's accurate assessment of the wiring:
Wiring to starter after dash ripped apart:
Red to 12v constant (black wire on car)
Green to 12v ignition (black wire with white stripe on car)
Blue with TWO red bands to 12v accessory (blue wire with red stripe on car)
Wiring to ECU
Brown to RPM signal (pin 21) - (black wire with red bands on ECU harness)
Blue with ONE red band to Speed sensor (pin 18) (yellow wire with white stripe on ECU harness)
Other Wiring:
Black to ground (run ground to any metal part)
Gray to parking brake (green with red stripe on car)
Always before wiring be sure to disconnect the battery!
Step one- Remove the dash panel under the driver side, there are 4 bolts(2 on the bottom and 2 behind the square pieces at the top, Also there are 2 screws holding the hood latch level on, remove these and pull the cable out of the lever to remove this piece. You should see two small plastic vent tubes, each is secured by a single screw and can easily be removed after those screws are taken out.
Step Two- unscrew the 4 screws on the underside of the steering column cover, this shell should then pull apart and you can remove the top and bottom separately (It helps to have the wheel tilted all the way down).
Step Three- Remove the side panels from either side of the center console(there should be 2 screws on the driver side and 3 on the passenger side). You can also remove the cd player from the center by taking off the trim piece(it pulls right out) and then unscrewing the 4 screws that hold the cd player bracket in. At this point it should slide out giving you better access to the ECU (the cd player does not have to be taken out but it does make accessing the ECU easier).
Step Four- Remove the single bolt holding your ECU which can be accessed from the passenger side. This will allow you to carefully tilt the ECU up so that the plug is more accessible.
Step Five- Reach to the underside of the ECU and carefully put out the plug closest to the drivers side, this should be the largest plug. Here is the Color coded ECU pinout that shows you what wires are on the right plug.
Now it's time to wire in your TT
Step Six- Decide where you want to mount your TT (a lot of people install them at the bottom of the driver side dash, I mounted mine beneath the cd player in the plastic tray).
Either way is good, but if you install it like I did you might have to extend some wires.
Step Seven- Take the black with red striped wire and the yellow with white striped wire and cut just a small section of the insulating (This can be done carefully using an exacto-knife or a nice pocket knife). Make a cut all the way around the wire in two locations close to one another, and then shave the insulating off in that small area. Now strip the end of the brown wire and blue wire with ONE band of red coming from the TT. Wrap the brown wire from the TT around the exposed section of the black with red band wire on the ECU plug. Now wrap this connection with electrical tape tightly and cinch a small zip tie onto the connection point. Repeat this process wrapping the stripped end of the blue with ONE red stripe wire from the TT around the yellow with white stripe on the ECU plug. Once the connections are complete and tightened with the zip ties, go ahead and plug it back into the ECU. At this point you can re-secure the ECU with the bolt on the passenger side and put the side panel back on along with the cd player if you removed it.
Step Eight- Now find the wire bundle coming from the back of the ignition (You will have to cut through the coating to get to the wires). You should see as stated by lancer54:
Used Wires:
1 solid black wire
1 blue w/ red stripe
1 black w/ white stripe
Not Used Wires:
1 solid blue wire
1 black w/ yellow stripe
1 black wire with red stripe
Take the three used wires being the solid black, black with white stripe, and black with red stripe and cut away the small sections of insulating like on the ECU wires. Also strip the ends of the remaining wires coming from the TT (you don't have to strip the black ground wire coming from the TT, that can be connected to any ground). Just as done before; connect the red TT wire to the exposed section of the solid black wire, connect the green TT wire to the exposed section of the black with single white stripe wire, and connect the blue wire with TWO red bands TT wire to the exposed section of the blue with single red stripe wire. Once again wrap each connection tightly with electrical tape and cinch with small zip tie.
Almost there
Step Nine- Assuming that you grounded the black TT wire to the frame somewhere, all you should have left is the gray parking break wire. This is why the panel on the drivers side was left off. Run the wire to the bottom of the E-brake where you should see a green wire with a red stripe. Remove a section of insulating from this wire and as done before connect the gray wire to it. Once the zip tie in cinched then put the side panel back on.
Step Ten- Your TT is now fully wired and ready to go. You may want to at this point reconnect the battery and test to make sure it is functioning correctly. Make sure to have your e-brake up because the timer will only function when the e-brake is active. Assuming everything works correctly; take time to re-bundle wires and re-install the small plastic vent pieces under the steering column. Then re-install your steering column cover and lower dash piece.
Lastly- Go hit the road and enjoy your new TT.
I hope this post will help people and make it easier on those trying to hardwire a TT. I tried to make this as painfully accurate and detailed as possible, hopefully it worked. Pictures will be up tomorrow as soon as I can load them.
