how to change the starter???

The starter is located right behind the motor on the passenger side. It is bolted to your transmission with two 14mm bolts. There are two wires that need to be removed from the starter so disconnect the battery.

ok, so i have a 96 eclipse 5 speed front wheel drive 2.0 turbo. where is the starter and how do i change it? please help thanks.

Take off the shifter cables frm the bracket, that is on a tranny. (better access)

then take a 14mm socket and unbolt two bolts ,that are holding the starter. (third and fourth bolts from the top of the tranny bolts)

pull out the starter from the back. then carefully pull it out up front through the heater hoses and the engine harness.

Before taking off the starter make sure, That you battery positive terminal is unplugged

To elaborate on that it is under your intake manifold and it is easiest to remove it from underneath the car. Loosen the bolts that are underneath your throttle body and then get under the car to disconnect the wires and pull the starter out. You will also probably find it easier if you remove your down pipe.

[edit] just saw the post right before mine. To each his own but I hate trying to fit it through all the stuff on top.

alright sounds great, sounds kinda easy. im pretty sure this is my problem...like i pulled into walmart to get some stuff and came back out and put the key in, pushed in the clutch and went to start the car but i had only lights on the car didnt click, turn over, or do absolutely anything. so idk what it is. i was just going to start with the starter...

Check your battery and battery terminal connections on both ends first as if these are bad the lights can work but the starter won't. Then make sure the wire connections to the starter are secure and you're getting voltage to the starter solenoid wire (black w/yellow stripe) - if not test the starter relay, ignition switch and disconnect any theft alarm. Hate to have you do all the work to take out the starter (which is not as easy as it sounds) to find that's not the problem. If you do replace the starter get one from a place that repairs starters and alternators. The ones from auto stores are notorious for remanufactured junk and you'll be replacing it again and again with your "free lifetime warranty" replacement one every 6 months.

Also you might try tapping the starter from underneath with a hammer to free up a stuck solenoid to see if that's the problem (you'll still have to replace it if it is however). If it is the starter you can sometimes fix them yourself if you are willing to do the work and have the time (if you don't have both of these then don't do it) - usually its cleaning, lubing, and replacing brushes.

And make sure you disconnect the battery before removing starter.

Liste to luv2rallye. Make sure it isn't just a bad connection to the battery or starter. Don't want to replace the starter for nothing.

If u happen to find it bad and replace, it isn't bad at all. I took offthe IC piping and removed battery and pulled it up from above the engine. I never even jacked the car up.

I got mine from underneath the car but after seeing it with the head off I think that it might be easier to get it from the top if you remove everything mentioned above. I didnt have to remove anything from going underneath but I have small hands and skinny arms and it was a bi*** to say the least. Took atleast 3 to 4 hours if I can remember correctly. Good luck.

hahaha well it was with no jacks basic basic tools and well no knowledge of how to do it properly. Didnt know about this site yet either. It probably would of taken alot less time had I got info from here and well it hadnt been the first thing that I actually did to my car. I had no clue were it was or how to get it. I could of done it nowadays probably in 30 mins though.

I am having the same problem now... car cranks, but doesn't turn over. I have been jumping it and it has been working, but I'm pretty sure its not the battery. Takes about 5 minutes of charging and cranking to get it to start. Sounds to me like the solenoid is worn/partly stuck.
I thought it was the battery.. but all lights, stereo, all electronics work good.
I'm headed on a little Christmas vacation, but ordering a starter pulled from another 2g.... will let you know how it goes when I get back!

Hey guys ha e a 95 gst standard that won't start I disconnect battery to check starter and when I connected it back the starter clicked over a few times and still won't start. I've been read about all the electrical problems it could have too so does anyone recommend anything 1st

If you hear the starter clicking then I'm betting your battery is not delivering enough juice. You may have a dead battery or one that's just undercharged.

This is assuming you don't have a wiring issue with the battery or charger like a loose ground.

Check to make sure the wiring is good. If all is good, pull the starter off and take it to a local auto parts store for a test. If the starter is ok, take some sand paper (or a scuff pad) and clean up mating areas of the starter and transmission to make sure you have good ground. As i found out the hard way, two bolts do not give you enough of a ground.

Take it from me man don't push start the car too much I recently replaced a head because popping the clutch caused the timing belt to skip teeth! So do yourself a favor and just change the starter

I've had a starting problem for years. Everything comes, but the starter wouldn't turn over. Replaced the starter, checked the wiring to the starter, replaced relays, etc. I finally got fed up one day after 30mins in the parking lot with my groceries defrosting and installed a push button (works only when the key is in the on position). The car starts with they key sometimes, but if it doesn't I just push the button and it fires up.

I have that problem too. Wont start just hear my fuel pump turn on but enfine wont turn over. But its because one of my fuses is fried. Hit the alternator with a wrench (forgot to disconnect the battery) sparked and blew the fuse. It is the fuse that says 100A. Might wanna check your fuses and see if they are good. That migh be your problem.

Yeah mine just started doing the no start thing today. So i hit the starter and it started right up, i guess that means i need a new one just my luck. My first ever dsm and i get to change the starter myself, way to break me in LOL!!!
