How much power is the Stock trans good for? If I am going to be beefing up my car I think I should know this before I start to do any mods.

How many more times do you plan on asking this question?JTito said:To be specific how much Horse Power is a stock DSM trans good for?

Spoolin4Ever said:Well the point is that you never really know, and if you race the thing it's gonna break and it's friggin expensive for most people.
It's like asking how much horsepower will a DSM make reliably? Well, they aren't exactly known to be reliable just running 200 HP, let alone with 400 HP. Yet you will hear people say it can take anywhere from 400-600 HP.
How many of us have had to replace an engine and/or tranny before it even got to 250 HP? LOTS!
People in the "DSM Community" like perpetuating beliefs like this, when the reality is you can't gurantee it can take any certain amount of horsepower before it breaks, can you? If you can, I want to buy my next engine and tranny (would be the 3rd of both), from you!
And if you have to ask that question, you probably don't know how to fix it yourself, and for those people Isn't it? It's about $3000 for a built tranny, or a new factory one.
Just trying to help someone think about what they are doing before they end up in the bottomless money pit like myself and many others here.
Flamers.
). I know that if I use my car in the track, is much more possible that I brake something (it's obvious), but are DSM trannies more often to brake than other cars or what???
! It really the luck of the draw and the history of the vehicle.slvrstingray said:In the last 9 years, I have gone through 5 transmissions on my AWD car and 2 on my FWD's. I have owned 19 DSM's and have worked on hundreds in the last 9 years! I can tell you that the stock transmissions are pretty stout. I've raced on them, beat on them, and driven them daily for quite some time now. I've seen them lose bearings and syncros at around 110,000 and i've seen some last all the way to 279,000 with wide range of cars in between. With my experience, I can tell you that older and higher mileage trannys have the tendancy to have worn sycro's especially in 1990 to 1991. They have gotten better with the syncro material since then. If you beat on anything... it will break sooner. But sometimes - it is inevitable. They just break because they are DSMs!!!! It really the luck of the draw and the history of the vehicle.
those are the kind of answers that I did not want to have listened
I will think it twice before racing again on the wednesday night track
Oh, yes. And, up in the adjacent tree tops, imbedded into nearby guard railing, and poking out of the top of the Tech Inspector's head. Ow.Cheks_Talon_TSi said:Sorry to jump in, but do it is common (often) to see broken STOCK DSM transimissions on the 1/4mi track???
