How much power is the Stock trans good for? If I am going to be beefing up my car I think I should know this before I start to do any mods. :dsm:

To be specific how much Horse Power is a stock DSM trans good for? Im talking about a DSM trans that has been rebuilt? I was thinking about getting a TRE trans with the double 2nd gear sycnro. Is that over kill? :dsm:

I have seen guys in the 400hp plus range on a completely stock trans. But what are your plans for your car. Cause if your not making or plan on making SERIOUS hp imho buying a built tranny is not worth it unless you actually break it. But if you dont plan on making significant amounts of power i would not seem necessary. But if you want a built trans ot KNOW that its STRONg then go for it..

Well to be specific Im prolly looking only looking to make about 320-350 Hp Range. Are a good stock DSM trans good for quality shifting into second gear? I talking about the 2nd gear shift that occures after a launch and then going into second gear? Over all I drive my car as a daily driver how ever as we all do I like to get out jollys off to once in a while.... ROFL :dsm:

Actually it depends on how you treat it. I mean they break with stock horsepower anyway...let alone high horsepower.

Obvously if you launch it it can break. I'm talking about a stock tranny, not built.

If you have about $3000, you can buy a nice tranny that is built.

Do you have $3000?

Sorry to jump in, but do it is common (often) to see broken STOCK DSM transimissions on the 1/4mi track???

Well the point is that you never really know, and if you race the thing it's gonna break and it's friggin expensive for most people.

It's like asking how much horsepower will a DSM make reliably? Well, they aren't exactly known to be reliable just running 200 HP, let alone with 400 HP. Yet you will hear people say it can take anywhere from 400-600 HP.

How many of us have had to replace an engine and/or tranny before it even got to 250 HP? LOTS!

People in the "DSM Community" like perpetuating beliefs like this, when the reality is you can't gurantee it can take any certain amount of horsepower before it breaks, can you? If you can, I want to buy my next engine and tranny (would be the 3rd of both), from you!

And if you have to ask that question, you probably don't know how to fix it yourself, and for those people Isn't it? It's about $3000 for a built tranny, or a new factory one.

Just trying to help someone think about what they are doing before they end up in the bottomless money pit like myself and many others here.

So, as far as I have read, the DSM Transmissions are not good enough to use them on the 1/4mi track??? that's what you want to said??? I mean, our stock trannys won't hold the 1/4mi drag race use???...
I am also very interested in the thread, becuase I am newbie on DSM cars... I am using my car once a week on the 1/4mi track and I won't like to see my tranny in pieces WTF (and me without my daily car :nono: ). I know that if I use my car in the track, is much more possible that I brake something (it's obvious), but are DSM trannies more often to brake than other cars or what???
If it is sure that my tranny will brake, I won't use it any more on the track... Or at least, after I gain $3,000.00 :sneaky:

Thanks, and I wll be waiting replies from the guys with experience...

In the last 9 years, I have gone through 5 transmissions on my AWD car and 2 on my FWD's. I have owned 19 DSM's and have worked on hundreds in the last 9 years! I can tell you that the stock transmissions are pretty stout. I've raced on them, beat on them, and driven them daily for quite some time now. I've seen them lose bearings and syncros at around 110,000 and i've seen some last all the way to 279,000 with wide range of cars in between. With my experience, I can tell you that older and higher mileage trannys have the tendancy to have worn sycro's especially in 1990 to 1991. They have gotten better with the syncro material since then. If you beat on anything... it will break sooner. But sometimes - it is inevitable. They just break because they are DSMs!!! LOL! It really the luck of the draw and the history of the vehicle.

DAMN!!! those are the kind of answers that I did not want to have listened :barf: I will think it twice before racing again on the wednesday night track

Oh, yes. And, up in the adjacent tree tops, imbedded into nearby guard railing, and poking out of the top of the Tech Inspector's head. Ow.

Mmmmmmmmh??? :D

This is like a step above bench racing. You know a million diffrenmt answers are gonna be posted in here so your chances of getting a flat out answer that everyone says is slim to none and slim just left the building. Go makle whatever power your lookin to make. Think about it you beef it up now you have the same down time as if you wait till it breaks IF it breaks. So my suggestion whatever it's worth to you go out make your power drive it low boost around town and crank it when you go racing and see what happens. Worse case scenario you break your trans and do what you were gonna have to do anyway. Best case you have a car that does what you want but you save 2k in a trany rebuild.
