i rebuilt my 4g63 and just got her to crank the other day :D. i had a lot of valve train chatter. i was mainly just wondering how long does it usually take for this to clear up? i was kinda worried i bent a valve but it stayed at a constant 2000 rpms and didnt drop or spudder. how would i know if i bent a valve? wouldnt run like it was only running on 3 cylinders?

If a valve is bent you get a loud sharp tapping noise from under the valve cover. Not sure if it would run funny right away. But it is very damaging. And lifters should be bleed before you put them in or you could/will bend a valve. Once they are in for the first start up it sounds like a mini diesel for about 15-20 mins. (brand new lifters)

They will rattle for a good while until they get completely pumped up. You did put some lube in the lifter holes so they would have some at start up? Like Lubriplate motor assembly grease. To bleed them out it takes a few seconds with a paper clip. :D

Compressing them in a vise works too, but maybe your question should be "how long does it take them to pump up?", not long really. If you use a drill to pre-lube your motor (assuming it on an engine stand) prior to putting the t-belt on then youll have less of an issue upon first start.

last one I did took a few days worth of driving before the thing cleared up completely....other than priming them before start up the only other option is to use fast bleed lifters....the car may run a bit rough until the lifters bleed out as well, I wouldn't worry with it until you know for sure that they're bled out and you still have valve train noise.....then you got an issue.

William-

im going to crank it back up when i get these little oil leaks fixed and drive her around some. hopefully the chatter will just go away. i plan on letting her get to operation temperature then driving her around for about 20-30 minutes. by then i hope it quiets down some.
