There are a few easy ways to tell.

First off, a 2nd gen transmission (95-99) has a counterweight on the end of the shift assembly, while the 1G doesn't have a shifter counterweight at all.

Second, the speed sensor at the rear of the transmission is installed "through" the rear transmission/motor mount. It also has a rectangular 2-prong plug that looks just like a TPS plug. The 1G has a round, screw-in speed sensor plug.

The 2nd Gen bellhousing also has an extra bolt hole near the front motor mount (I believe that there are a total of 9 bolts that connect to the block).

The 2nd Gen transmission has the rear motor mount bolted to it, whereas the 1G transmission has the rear mount bolted to the engine block.

These are a few details. I have also attached a few pictures of a 1G transmission with a scattershield in place to show the details of the lack of a shifter counterweight, etc. If you want 2G pictures, I will have to go take some of my transmission or one sitting around.

Wouldnt it be easier just to look how many bolts the flywheel has on it? 6 bolt a 1g, 7 for a 2g.

The flywheel is attached to the motor and 1gb have 7 bolt motors
