how do you take off the bs belt??

I never had problems with my 2g, I don't know to much about the 1g, but I have personally never heard of anyone running into this, although I only know like 2-3 people with 1g's.
 
Oil pumps are different on the 7bolt motors i believe. You need to remove the sprocket to get the belt off.
 
Did you remove the trigger plate/spacer? After you do that just loosen the bolt for the BS tensioner pulley and the belt should just slide off the sprocket.
 
YOu can use a sprocket remover tool but I've always just tapped the sides with a rubber mallet and pulled it off.
 
An impact wrench would be the easiest way.

Although I don't recommend it, I have heard of guys removing the valve cover and wedging some rags between the cams and the wall of the head (obviously requires the t-belt to still be on) to keep things from rotating.

You can also drop the oil pan and wedge a rag between the crankshaft and block to keep it from turning although I have never personally done it.
 
I did it to my six bolt. Its easy. Like already stated there is two was to do it. I was doing a rebuild on the whole motor, so i used the crank.To keep it from spinning i jammed it up. Then when you have that done pull the timing belt tensioner off, make sure you replace it with a brand new one when you retime the car. Then the timing belt will be removed. Then get an impact gun. Take the bolt off for the crank, everything should slid off. The balance belt tensioner should still be keeping it on there, loosen this bolt. That should be it.
