I had my head surfaced and new seals put on when I dropped in a short block. But now I am burning oil, I see a cloud on start up then it goes away, I burn a quart every other tank of gas. My number one plug always has a build up so I know that is the cylinder burning oil. I replaced the exhaust seals on one with viton blue but have not done the intake yet. Compression is 180 on all four.

It has been suggested that I need valve Guides, how can I check them before tearing the head off?

well the text book way is to mic the stem of each valve in 3 spots, then slide a ball gauge thu each guide. then subtract the stem dia from the ball gauge and figure out the clearance.

but most shops, machinists, that have been doing it for years, do a wiggle test... we know the feel of it

whats tight, what is ok, and what is loose...

the bad news is, no matter how they get checked, the head has to be off the car, and disassembled.

if the guides are wore/loose and need replaced, then the seats will have to be cut and a full valvejob done.

this talks about bent valves, but no matter the reason for the guides to be changed this still applies.
