I have an eclipse with the 1.8 SOHC motor with 165k on it. It runs pretty sound for its mileage and havnt had any major problems with it since i've owned it. I know that my engine isnt exactly the most popular, powerful, etc. etc. of all the eclipse engines but i think it would be cool to turbocharge it. I know that it will be time consuming and expensive but i think it would be unique, if i ever have the time and money to put into it. I know all of u are prolly thinking to urselves "man, just sell ur car and get the turbo version, but thats not really what i want to do. I want to take what i have and make it the best that i possibly can. How can i turbo charge my car. I need details because im kinda new to all of this, and dont know exactly what is involved in this kind of conversion...........all i know is that it has been done before. And how much will it end up costin me in the end. Any comments will be appreciated. :thumb:

Honestly, it is not worth it. If you really really just HAVE to keep that car, you would be better off (money, time, outcome) swapping in a 2.0 turbo engine.

Well, as he said, and you already know, it's not really worth doing it. First of all, you're running pistons that are suited for NA (higher compression .. I believe 9.0:1) So if you are able to turbocharge, you can't run the boost very high. Also, you'd need to tap lines for the oil and the coolant. I'm not sure how similar the thermostat housings are, but you might be able to switch a turbo thermostat over. Also, you'd have to rig up piping for an intercooler (if you want one) and then you need a blow off valve. Also, you'd want a smaller turbo because you're using a 1.8L.

So, see what you can do :talon:. You'd also have to make a manifold for it. That wouldn't be fun.

heres your answer...

used 14b - 150
custom fab manifold (or maybe the turbo one fits..not sure...check on that) - 150-500
custom 2.5 turbo back exhaust - 350
oil lines, fuel lines - 125
custom intercooler pipes - 200
1g bov - 60
boost controller - 75
boost gauge - 50
EGT gauge - 100
1g SMIC - 50

those are pretty much the necessary things to get it turboed and running. now if you want to run more boost, heres some more things you will need

450cc injectors - 50
walboro 190 fuel pump - 85
apex safc2 - 300
forged pistons - 350
forged rods - 350
act 2100/2600 - 350

you could always go with bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, a FMIC, 16g, or a 3" exhaust...but if u just want to turbo it and get it running, then the top list would get it up and running. the bottom list would allow you to run more boost, and then the things i just listed would allow it to be a pretty quick car...i say go for it, i think it would be tyte if you turboed your 1.8, good luck and keep us updated

ECU? For what? So with labor included(because i wont be able to do it myself) how much do you think it would come out to be. ...................................... Oh yah, i was pulling out onto the highway today and this black 93'ish MR2 went zooming by with GReddy stickers all over the body...so i decided to see if he really had that kinda stuff under the hood. So i caught up to him at a red light and we were side by side. We both looked at eachother( even though i was trying to look more at the car) and i guess he took that as a challenge or something. So i casually took off and he was behind me at first, and all the sudden i heard this huge back fire and he was a car length in front of me and when he shifted i heard this loud ass BOV. He was long gone ( ten car lengths away and i could still here his BOV). By the way it wasnt a race :) . I love the sound of turbos. If i turboed my car would i be able to hear my BOV( unlike stock 1g turbos that cant be vented to the atmosphere).

Interesting point, i don't think it would work out because basically you would be running the same turbo setup as a 2.0 motor, and venting doesn't work w/o a GM MAF and translator, or a VPC on that motor. My hypothesis is no, not without the parts mentioned. Also, I have a quick question, can you run the SAFC w/ the GM MAF translator, i know they are two different tuning devices, but can they work together?

I don't know much about the 1.8 NA, but if it doesn't have an airflow meter on the intake, you would be able to vent to the atmosphere no problem. If it does, it will need some kind of translation device to convert it to blow-through. I doubt the translator they make for the 1g turbo will work with your ECU, but like I said...I don't know.

I don't think you'd need a new ECU if your keeping the same engine, it will just need a piggyback system to control your higher fuel need.

As for using the SAFC and a GM MAFT together, that works just fine. The new Translators tune to within 2% I believe, and the SAFC does it within 1% so its not necessary to have both. The upside to running both is that you can vent to the atmosphere, AND you don't have to get out of your car and pop your hood every time you want to make a change to your fuel trims.
