I just got a 1992 GSX that has been sitting for a few years. I want to drain the old gas out. I found the gas tank plug but I'm not sure how it comes out. Can anybody tell me how to remove the gas tank plug?

So the gas tank drain plug is a 17mm or 19mm, use a breaker bar and I un-screw it from underneath the car? I located the plug but if I remember right it was round and didn't have any sort of hex head on it.

Sorry, but I'm just a newbie... BUT I am wanting to learn....

It has a hex head on it. It is probably hidden under the undercoating. Scrape it off or hammer the socket on it.

I need to do this also on both my 1G and 2G, LOL. Haven't looked under there yet but where is the plug located at exactly? backside, middle or front of the tank?!

The plug is located on the bottom-rear of the tank on the driver side. The size of the bolt is much larger than a 19mm though. From my memory I thought it was a 23mm or similar. If you never removed it before, it is covered with a thin undercoating. Almost like a black stucco wall coating.

THIS IS ONLY FOR 1G's. You 2G guys have plastic fuel tanks. No drain plug on 2G's.

Figures it would be larger socket than i have LOL. Guess i'll try an open end wrench on it.

Only way to drain fuel on 2Gs is? from the feed line itself?

Thanks!

Anyone have any advice on how to clean the inside of a gas tank? This car has been sitting for 4 years and only started a few times over that period. The fuel pump quick working so I replaced it but discovered that the tank was nasty inside.

I plan on draining the tank. Then use a scotch brite pad and some new gas and scrub the gunk from the tank and then drain it. I'll do this over and over until it is clean.

How does that sound?

The drain is a 24mm.

I would flush the tank with more clean gas like you mentioned. I'm not so sure about the scotchbrite as particulates could come from that and contaminate the tank. You will want to use something that won't fall apart if you are going to wipe the inside out. As always, be very cautious around the fuel/vapors.

I would start looking for a replacement before you waste a bunch of money trying to clean it. I tried it all, muriatic acid, scrubbing with various steel and plastic brushes, even tumbling with rocks. No matter what, more rust particles cam out each time I rinsed it. You may have better luck than I, but eventually I had to go junkyarding.

I see what you mean. When I swapped out the fuel pump mine wasn't nothing like what's pictured. Fortuntley, My tank doesn't appear to be rusty. It looks more like a 'film' if anything. Although I'm sure there is rust in there.
