How do i launch my AWD [Merged 6-7]

I did a few launches bouncing off the rev limiter. I think that was 8750 for a tsi awd. I was younger then, making a six figure income and was convinced the 7 bolt was doomed to fail anyways. I never broke anything although I did toast a clutch. Bouncing off the rev limiter with the atmospheric dump o2 sensor at 17 psi sounds insane! Like a huge caliber machine gun. I did some more practice yesterday. I did a couple launches at 4500 or so and got one launch that was really pretty damn good. More practice is needed. I intend to take the Talon to union grove here one of these weekends this summer and don't want to be embarrassed by a crappy launch.:talon:
 
Here's how I've taught people and get back into the hang of it myself(without stutterbox):

Start at a fairly low rpm, say 3000. Hold the revs at 3000rpm(you may want to let the clutch out a tiny tiny bit just to preload the drivetrain), floor it and simultaneously let out the clutch just enough to maintain 3k. The engine revs and wheel speed will quickly match, making the revs go above 3k. At this point, quickly let the clutch all the way out since it's no longer slipping anyway. Basically, all you're doing is starting out at x rpm, flooring it, and working to clutch to maintain that rpm until wheelspeed is matched and going about your merry way to redline.

Work your way up in starting revs as you feel comfortable, remembering to preload the drivetrain before you really start letting the clutch out. This is the easiest on the drivetrain for what's being accomplished IMO. The clutch is being slipped a bit but there's really no way around it without bogging or being really harsh on the drivetrain.

Once you get that down at whatever rpm you want to launch at, or when you start to lose traction, there is a trick to getting into boost a bit quicker without the aid of stutterbox. Do just like before, but this time start out at idle and floor it. Again, let the clutch grab a tiny tiny bit(not even enough to move forward) to preload the drivetrain. As soon as you reach the desired rpm, start letting the clutch out while still at WOT to maintain that rpm just like before, and let the clutch all the way out as soon as your revs and wheelspeed match. Revving the car up to the desired rpm "prespools" the turbo a bit. Not enough to build boost on the gauge since the engine is taking in more air at a faster rate than the turbo, but it's still sending exhaust through it getting part way up to speed. This technique would be a b!tch trying to cut the light at the track but definitely gets you into boost sooner.

Again, for example:
Revs to go 5k, stay there while being floored, then go above while the clutch is completely let go. The revs shouldn't drop below 5k at any point, nor should the clutch be doing anything but progressively being let out.

I've heard of flooring it, letting off, flooring it, letting of to maintain an rpm instead of just holding it there to keep the turbo spinning quicker, but I haven't messed with it that much.

Ive been at the track 3 times this year, and i have a problem with my 60ft times. I went from having 1.38 60' times last season, to 2.0+ 60' this year. ( my worst being a horrible 2.98! :notgood: ) The only thing i have changed was my ECU, which now has a two step in it. When i get out of the hole the car pulls for a second and then falls on its face! I had this problem when i first began to race years ago and used to just dump the clutch at the track, ( not knowing that slipping it makes a huge difference. )

My friend has an Evo MR, which comes stock with a built in two step. He told me when he floors his gas and slips the clutch the car boggs just like mine. He said go 1/4 throttle allow it to rev out and then slip it out with the clutch. He also said that when you do NOT floor the pedal the two step bounces faster. ( i have tried this myself with mine and it is true, there is alot less time in between the rpm "bouncing" ) Is this the proper way of launching? Im all out of ideas at this point, im running 110mhp passes with only a 12.75 time and a 2.98 60'... :confused: and no i am not spinning the tires because i know someone might link it to that.
 
sounds like you need your launch rpm set higher. I have mine set at 5750 with my fp3065 (no antilag) and i build 6 psi at the launch and it is all i can do to keep it from spinning all the way through first. I slip for about .5 of a second according to my logs. I also preload the drivetrain before i launch by holding the ebrake and just barely slipping the clutch as the tree falls....then i drop the ebrake and start letting the clutch the rest of the way out. Was running low 1.7's all last weekend on street tires. Open diffs are holding me back(as well as the tires)
 
4500, I try to feather it out but it seems the car just lifts and then moves. Not what I expected from all the awd hype on this site. still on stock clutch though.
 
what did you expect? i have seen some nice cars do this, it will actualy buck up on the rear wheels and haul balls...but yeah, that is what happens to any car when you dump it. it lifts a little (weight shift over shocks, driveline and what not) and plants to tires. you might want to change your clutch if you want to keep doing that a lot...otherwise burnt up like toast in a 5000 degree toaster....
 
ok first did you hold it at 4500rpms, or pulse it at 4500ish rpms??

### if you just hold it then the turbo drops back in to vacuume and loose all its spool upm you have to pulse it so the turbo keeps spooling theb let the cluch out while you are gassing it
 
This is what I would do when I had the stock clutch:

Get it up to 4,700-5,000

Start pumping the gas around that rpm (let go then hit it untill I launch). This puts a load on the motor and might create 1 or 2 psi at the launch.

Drop the clutch and hammer the gas

Keep in mind that I didn't care about dumping the clutch because I already had a new one ready to go in. And when you dump a stock clutch the disc will spin for a second. This will take shock off the drivetrain but will wear the clutch down faster. And since the disc is spinning the car won't bog.
 
how many launches can I get off the stock clutch?

I bought my car with 87,000 miles on it. I don't know if the clutch was replaced before I got the car. I got probably around 20 launches the way I described launching and about 10,000 miles.
 
It can only come with practice and you have to get a feel for it. I blip the throttle around 5K to build up boost then when its time to launch its a fast slip of the clutch and mashing of the throttle. That takes a split second
 
studder at 5500 then feather the gas out of the hole, once it spools let it out (usually when i hear the wastegate open then let it out) and run it up to 9000rmps then shift
 
Just got the 50-trim on my Evo 1 and will be doing some launches this weekend. Have the launch control set at 5500rpm. I've tried a couple of practice launches and when I preload the drivetrain and floor the gas, I will launch with 10psi and spin tyres all through 1st gear ( lifting foot off the clutch very quickly). Tried lowering the boost to about 5-6psi at launch and I got a bit of spin but then it all hooked up and I flew.

Should I be flooring the throttle and trying to launch with 10psi+ of boost by slipping the clutch (I have a Centerforce which I know I am going to go through with the power I'm making in the next 6 months), or should I just go for the 5-6psi launches?

For the record, I have no way of measuring 60ft times.
 
I would launch with as much boost as possible with spinning the tires as little as possible. If you can launch at 5-6psi and bite and go, then I would try launching with more boost. But say if you leave the line with 10 psi and you spin a bunch, it in turns makes the 60ft worse. So I would try 7-8 and see what happens. It may turn out that 5-6 is best for you. Just trial and error. But like I said, launch with as much boost as you can build and still make the tires hook.

Yeah, I just need to get to a quiet bit of road close by and do some practice. Am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to lay down 10psi+ at launch and keep traction on these coral-based roads. Not done much of the clutch slipping but might have to try it. Am always afraid I'll leave it slipping for too long and will burn my clutch or just go nowhere!
