OK guys how do i change my fuel filter on my 91 laser i know its under the battery on the left side of the car do i have to do anything special to change it out like disconnect the battery or disconnect power to the fuel pump or anyhting like that or is it just disconnect the hoses to the filter and change it any help would be awesome and thanks guys.

Make sure you get a flare wrench to take off the bottom fitting, if you round that it makes a super easy job a very shitty job. Other than that it takes like 20 minutes which includes looked for the crush washers you're bound to drop.

No need to depressurize the system. Just get out of the way and don't drive the car 200 miles before you do it LOL. I've never done one on a DSM but I used to be a ford quick lane tech and i did all sorts of cars and fuel filters are really simple. Good luck man

how do i depressurize my fuel system

Break loose a fitting or cut a rubber line. When it stops spraying you in the face, it's depressurized. :D

Just put a rag around the filter fitting, and crack it loose. Loosen it slowly and let whatever pressure there is bleed off. Wouldn't hurt to disconnect the battery leads first and avoid any chance of a spark, and let the car sit for a bit before removing the lines.

Just use common sense, and you'll be fine.

Get the PB blaster ready, especially if it hasn't been touched in a while.
x3 on the flare nut wrench.

And don't do what the guy at Advance told me.

"Well if this here PB don't work, we sell them portable butane torches. Just blast the nut with 'er for a minute and then she'll slip off like you ain't never believe."

Wow, the tools are correct but the way they are telling you to depressurize is dangerous and could be scary for a first timer. Minus well just tell the OP the correct way. But correct way to depressurze your fuel system is to unplug your fuel pump. Should be a quick connect pigtail attached to your pump. I never owned a FWD so have no idea where it would be at but a quick search in the forums will give you the location. But just disconnect it and crank the engine a bit. While cranking your fuel injectors are injecting what fuel pressure is built up and your plugs are burning it.

You will have some leakage from fuel line running from filter to fuel rail and also leakeage from whats being held in fuel filter. So some rags would be useful in catching it.

Well, no one actually ansewered all your questions so here...

Its not under your battery it is next to it bolted to the firewall. Just follow the feed line from the end of your fuel rail down to the filter. It is a lot easier to remove the bottom nut with the battery removed, so save yourself the trouble and risk of damaging the nut or line and remove the battery. You do not need to depressurize your fuel system at all. and whoever suggested that it could be scary to remove it without releasing th epressure it must have one of those direct injection 1g'sdsm's with 2400psi fuel pressure. Fuel won't spray any where. A smallamount will probably leak out. Its more important not to tip the filter upside down after you remove it because it probably hasn't been changed in a LONG time and the rusty nasty shit in there will stain anyhting it drips on, including your floor or driveway

the first time may be frustrating because of the bottom flare nut but everytime after this will be very easy!

But just disconnect it and crank the engine a bit. While cranking your fuel injectors are injecting what fuel pressure is built up and your plugs are burning it.

It will most likely start and run for a couple of seconds, until the fuel is exhausted.

It's been so long since I've seen a 1g that holds fuel pressure for any length of time that I don't really think about it any more...but that is good advice just in case.

Abolutely x2 on the flare nut wrench! Also, make sure that you put it back on the correct way.

x3 on that. I had to figure out how to fix my fuel line after ruining it because I rounded the nut with a simple open ended wrench then had to cut the line.
