i was doing a 2nd gear pull today and i heard the engine knocking. i had suspected before that it was but i heard it for sure today. so anyway how do i adjust it? i didnt see a cas is the same spot as a 1g.

Your CAS is beind your intake cam gear. You can't adjust base timing on a 2g. Is the engine knock like a mechanical knock, or detonation knock? If you have a logger, check your timing curves or o2 to find out if you are running too lean at WOT.

i dont have a logger. it was for sure detonation knock. Ive heard it before in other cars. i was doing a 2nd gear pull and up past 4k rpm i started to hear it. im using 92, highest octane i can get around here. i do have a gallon of toulene i can put in the tank and see if it still knocks.

if i cant adjust timing is there any way to stop the knock?

You can check voltage on it, and check your fuel rail pressure. That was just a guess though, I have no idea if thats your problem or not. I've never dealt with knock on a bone stock car. Maybe someone who has could chip in.

checking the pump sounds like a good idea. i didnt know that base timing cant be changed on a 2g. so there are very few things left that could cause a stock car to knock.

while cleaning the throttle body i did notice a bunch of oil in the elbow. could be from a bad pcv but the car doesnt use a lot of oil.

Have you checked for play in your turbo? When they start to go, they spit out oil in your intake. If there is oil all the way in your TB elbow, chances are its inside your intercooler reducing its cooling efficency. Its possible the turbo is just blowing hot air? Might want to take off the IC and clean it out as well. Just some ideas.

i checked the turbo a few months ago, it did have a little play in it. not a whole lot though. ill pull off the ic and clean it and check the turbo again. i guess that would explain where my oil is going. in the last 3k miles ive gone through almost 2qt of oil. i did just switch it to mobil 1 so there is some small leaks on the valve cover, but not bad enough to lose that much oil.
i have a digital caliper so i can probably get a number for the shaft play. does anyone know the limit of play before the turbo need to be replaced?

I don't think there is supposed to be any shaft play. Its not anything that needs a caliper gauge or dial inticator or anything...just feeling movement with your hand is enough to know weather or not its ok. I think they allow just a tiny wiggle when you move the shaft up and down for oil clearence, but no in and out (pushing from passenger side to driver side) is allowed. You could allow for a little bit of play as they start getting older, but its common practice for those modding DSMs to just upgrade to a 14b/16g when the t25 starts spitting oil, starts developing shaft play, or just shows signs of dying in general.

Just as a reference, when the bearings were dry on my e16g before I installed it, it moved up and down a a couple thousandths of an inch, but once it had full oil pressure after it was primed, it had zero in/out or up/down.

any play - replace

oil in the charge air drops the effective octane to like 82 - so you can easily get knock from oil contamination.
