How Could This Have Happenend? (Pics)

Hey well long story short my speedo cable was shot so I went and replaced it. It was working fine for a few weeks but broke again. I checked the tranny and the cable was still there so I took apart the dash and this is what I saw. WTF

The plastic piece was turned into goop! My friend said that the cable might have been twisted causing it to heat up. I just want to know what to do to prevent this from happening again. Thanks a lot.

I can see it but its kind of hard to tell what everything is in one of the pictures... can you take a picture with a digital camera so it is more in focus. I can try to help then but i dont know what it is in that last picture.

The last pic is just of the plastic melted on my finger. There isnt much to see. Im just wondering what could have cause my speedo cable to melt.

Hmmm... I wouldnt think that it being twisted up or tied would cause it to melt, unless it was frayed and was shorting out on it self or something. It could have been arching between the wire sections that ran close together but were not touching. Other then that i have no idea i will have to do some research.

If it was melted plastic, then it would cool off and harden. So whatever is on your finger isn't melted plastic. My guess is someone tried to lube up the cable at some point in time.
