How close is too close for rubber oil drain?

Switched oil drain setups, and now have a push-lock style 5/8" drain. My question is, will it melt? Should I wrap it in heat tape or something?

Mine's the same and I have no heat wrap on the DP (just craploads of VHT). As long as you used thick line, it'll be fine. Keep in mind that rubber actually dissipates heat very well and doesn't hold on to too much. Run the motor for a while and grab the hose. It won't even hurt. If you want to wrap it you can, but it's not necessary.

Hope that helps,

Andy

I'd recommend hi-temp silicone for that location, or for any hot oil drain. Truck shop. They'll probably have a pre-bent piece available, removing the kink threat.
And maybe a hose clamp that fits.

Mine's alot closer that your's, almost touching and I haven't had any problems with it. I wrapped the dump tube like you did, but I also put a spark plug wire heat shield on the drain hose.

Running the same style for a good a while and have not had any problems. Checked a few times under the car and no signs of it being melted. But I do believe mine is the high temp silicone type that defiant speaks of. It's very thick and you can see the plys inbetween and all the other reinforcement in the layers.

Well, it is line I picked up from a hydraulic hose supply store. 300PSI rated, and according to the owner, will handle the heat and oil fine.

We'll see, I guess. Hopefully it isn't a decision I'll regret.

Careful with using lines like that, If the angle is too sharp the heat will disform it slightly and could cause it to kink causing a "blown turbo like smoking". I've seen an oil return like that do this, so i'd suggest going to something a little more heat resistant like;

The kinking is not what I am worried about. It has a very smooth bend in it.

My AN setup WAS kinking, which I why I removed it.
