How close is 225/50/16 and 245/45/16?

Is there a chance you could elaborate on this. I don't understand what you meant. Your car doesn't have "the gear that has 1.000 ratio." Is this a hypothetical ratio, or were you trying to get the wheels to turn the same as the engine: 3000rpm? Also how fast was your car travelling to get 0.109mph discrepancy?
I just didn’t have handy original 2G ratios, but I know that some of the gears are above 1.000, while the others are below. So, for less complicated calculation I used an easy number. This I believe goes somewhere between the 3rd and 4th gear.

Actual speed that was calculated at 3000 RPMs and above gear ratio and EVO size tires was slightly over 59 mph.

Yeah, I guess I could drive around with it for a bit, but I am planning on installing a VCE on my 1G awd soon as well as just replacing 2 of the tires so everything matches up. Dunno how 'technical' I could be, seeing as it would mostly be guestamations and how it 'feels'. But yeah, I'll post what I find in the week that I breakin my new turbo setup.
Please let us know what you find out. When you put the VCE in, (even if you have tires that match really close) listen for whirring in the geartrain, and after a long drive, put your hands on the rearend to feel if it is getting hot. I was kind of hoping you had a 2g to do this on to see if the bigger ratio discrepancy was going to be more of a problem. My 1g has a locked center diff, and my rearend will be rather warm to the touch after more than fifty miles on the freeway at 70+mph. Please note that my tires are not all matched. (But they are close.) With matched tires you should have no problems.

Please keep us updated on what you do/find out!
Thanks,

Heres how I have my setup for now:

FRONT:
225/50/16
5/16" spacer
Stock Springs

REAR:
245/45/16
5/16" spacer
Small bit of grinding for wheel clearance
Ebach stock-sized Springs

I took a 5min drive to check everything including my new turbo setup. I had the windows down checking for leaks, rubbing sounds, or anything unusual. I dunno if it's just me or not, but the wider tires make me think its making a 'more rubber on the ground' sound as I drive around the housing area. It's what I would image huge slicks would sound like when driving around 3-5mph. Hard to explain, but its definetly not a rubbing sound. Not sure if it's a good or bad thing so I thought I would mention it. I didn't hear any noticable "wurrrring" or whinning. So far everything 'seems' ok for the drive.

After the drive around my neighborhood, I parked the car back home, and put my hand on the rear and on the front case directly over the VC. Not even warm. After I get my last 3 T-bolt clamps, I'll take another test drive to work (30min freeway drive to-and-from) and report back. But so far so good.

Anyone remember the topic here?
It's been a few days since I checked this thread, but I have a vague memory of it having something to do with putting slightly different tires on the front and back of an AWD which immediately begged the question of how much this will cause the center diff to work which made some of us look into whether the center diff is working all the time when the tires are exactly the same. But I could be wrong. ;)

To the thread-starter: what madness made you put the wider tires on the rear of a front-heavy AWD that is prone to understeer?

Please don't tell me you did for looks. Lie to me. Say that you thought the 225s would have more grip because the weight would be concentrated on a smaller contact patch. Say your girlfriend made you do it because the other way around would only encourage fast driving due to better handling. Say the car was in the garage backwards. Anything. Just don't say it was for looks. I beg you.

ROFL

No I just threw them on without contimplation of benefit. The 225's had more thread left so I figure, why not, and just slapped them on. I don't plan on running the car like this for too long. But if it makes you feel any better, I'll swap them out tomorrow when I have to inspect my front right rotor for a slight squeel. :) The fatness of the tires 'look' fairly similar. Standing from afar, it is hard to tell that they are different in width. So no...wanting to look "COOL" wasn't a factor LOL!
