Hello, I'm new to this forum and yes i have tried at least to research what my problem is but i couldn't find a real answer.

the problem I'm experiencing with my '97 Eclipse rs on every cold start i get a horrible squeal. the squeal goes away after i rev it at least past 3k RPM's. I replaced both belts when i bought the car about 3 months ago and I've heard that it could be that its loose but i have tried to tighten it couple different times but still the same ol' problem with the horrible squeal. I've gone to auto zone and bought this spray for squeaky belts so i popped my hood and turned on the car and sprayed it while the belts were running. it stopped for a little bit but once i restarted my car on a cold start back to the annoying squeal.

if anyone can help me out with this that would be great and save me a lot of embarrassment when starting my car.

thanks in advanced

p.s i have bought a new pulley w/ the tensioner bolt since the bolt broke off while replacing the belts.

Sounds like the belt isnt tight enough. they could of given you a belt thats to long also. Could be one of the accessories starting to go out cause the belt to slip on it if its locking up.

how far must i tighten it? ive tightened it more and more in like 3 different occasions. and forgot to add that its the a.c belt because everytime i do turn on the a.c while running it starts squealing again till i rev it again.

Best advice I ever took about a 420a was to remove that middle tensioner pulley and put on the shorter belt. Every problem I have ever had with squealing belts on them (very common) was 100% curred after I deleted that pulley from the system.

Tensioner pulley - Whats the point ?

490 length belt instead of 510

wait so remove the pulley/ bolt completely and have that shorter belt? never heard of or even thought of that solution but then again i dont know much as this is my first car ever. as for buying the belt any belt that length works or do i have to like search for one that fits eclipse or something?

I had this problem as well, when I bought my car recently it was Non Op for 3 years and I kept hearing the squeek noise coming from the belt. I ended up using a can and a half to make it stop. Haven't heard the noise ever since. Just make sure someone is in the car with it on while you put some spray on the belt. Don't be stingy on the spray :p , make sure you get it all over so it won't make noise anymore!

Hope this helped out!

Different belt manufacturers have different part numbers but usually will involve a 4 or a 5 depending on the number of grooves in the belt, in your case 5 and then the length which is 490. Couldn't tell you what vehicle to search it for but if you tell the parts store you want a 5 rib belt and the closest thing to 490 they can get for length you should be set.

It's possible the pulleys are glazed from loose or bad belts before. Belt spray doesn't help with that. When I've had that problem I use a dab of gritty liquid soap on the belt.
