higher octane on non turbo

You will not notice a difference. The higher the octane rating the less a car will knock. In high performance cars the engine's timing/internals are more aggressive and need a higher octane to not knock. If you car only requires 87 you really only need 87. Any performance gains would be negligible. So yes you would "waste" your money.
 
Higher octane will burn more efficient and provide better performance but on a non turbo dsm it won't make a huge or noticeable difference.
Save your money and put regular gas.
