Ok this is officially driving me crazy. I don't know where this sound is coming from but it only happens in 1st and 2nd gear. As soon as i get on the gas and get past 5psi i hear this whistling sound. I don't know how to describe it but it's high pitched and stutters repetitively all the way through fulkboost. It almost sounds like a boost leak but i checked all hses and all seems perfect. My vac is 19 and my boost hits 15-16psi all the time. It used to only do it once in awhile but now it does it all the time. I thought it might be my turbo going bad but it spools fine and sounds fine until i hear the whistling, then it over-powers all turbo sounds. But the odd thing is that it won't do it in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gears. Does anybody know what this could possibly be???

I have a 97 non turbo and it makes the same noise i does it at about 5k all the way until shifting i too am at a loss as to what it is

i'd like to say it's the same thing but it probably not. Mine does it once it hit 5 psi in now 2nd and sometimes 3rd. It sound slike a boost leak or pressure leak of somesort but i check all connections and hoses and all is good. Plus i'm getting full boost.

check for shaft play on your turbo. your turbo will still boost well but you might be slightly scraping the sides due to too much shaft play

Well i figured out what it was. My egt probe was leaking from around the connection at the manifold. I should have recognized it before b/c exhaust leaks usually make that sound.
