Here is what happens when you launch a 3 bolt too hard!

good luck, with the 3 bolt and sourcing a 4 bolt. For some reason I can't seem to find a 4 bolt for my car

i can't find out the diff. between 3 bolt or four . how do you tell just by looking at it? also, will a 1st gen ( 4 bolt) fit in my stock 95 awd

I believe all 2gs had a 4 bolt rear end so there would be no need to swap unless you where doing a auto to manual swap. Can anyone conform this?

Yes I also believe all 2g's have 4 bolts, just us unlucky 1ga cars.

Also sourcing a 4 bolt is easy, just not one for a good price. I dont want to pay more than $200 if I cant find one in a junk yard.

I'd probably drill, tap & 'jack" it out..

& Gee the 3 BOLTS didn't actually break - Would a 4 Bolt have been any better here?
probably easier to pull the other side then just punch it out from the middle.

So I pulled the other axle and poped the broken piece out. Cleaned everything as much as I could and changed the oil. Replaced it with an ebay unit I got, that was kind of weathered. Boots where worn and shafts where rusted.

Anyways I drove it for about one day. Next day on my first drive I pulled into traffic and got into boost in first gear. I was already rolling and it broke as soon as I hit about 10psi. Wasnt even at full boost and the damn thing just snapped. My mechanic buddy thinks it must have had a fracture because that would be the only explanation. Just my damn DSM luck.

knock on wood but i have launched my car SEVERAL times at 6k studder box launches and still have not broken a 3 bolt. my car has over 170k on it now. i dunno what you guys are doing but it must be pretty sick!

You are just lucky, believe me it will happen. I know two people running mid 11's, with hard launches and they still have not broken there 3 bolt axles.

i ushally have good luck with these cars. once again knocking on wood but i have NEVER even changed my rear diff fluid...
Do you still have stock springs? As I said above (somewhere) I had no probs with the rear axles until I changed out the springs to the H&Rs. The extra travel combined with your stiffer shocks must be helping you ;)

Well I put another shaft in and the damn thing broke under boost without launching. Only thing me and some buddys can think happened is the shaft had a crack or fracture that I could not see under visual inspection.

Anyways Ive been looking for a 4 bolt just to get rid of the crappy 3 bolt. Found a very nice 93 TSi shell and decided just to put my tranny and motor in the 4 bolt 93. It has no body damage and is in a lot better shape than my car. Wish me luck on the motor swap, I should be starting tomorrow.

or just maybe....

I have broke 5 personally and all 5 looked just like that and all 3 destroyed center section. It was said and I didn't disagree try an axle. Worst it can do is cost you $60.00

Ofcourse you can always test the rear end to see.

Goodluck

..... I might know a little something about these cars :)

I dont know where your getting at? The shaft was broken outside the diff, nothing inside the diff was even hit. I drove the car for a day before it broke again. The axle I installed was broken, not the center diff. Doesnt madder anyways since I'm getting a new shell with 4bolt. Dont act like I dont know what I'm doing, Ive been working on these for over 8 years.

So was 2 of mine. I have been working on these things since 1991. Just trying to point out that there may always be another option.
