HELPPP! revving on its own

i have a 90 fwd tsi talon and lastnight i was cruising around and i went to pass a buddy of mine the boost built up and i went to shift at about 4500 rpms . . . well when i pushed in the clutch the car revved to about 5500 to 6000 and stayed there for like a second and a half. IDK what is causing this and it did it again today. Any help would be very appreciated!!!!! thanks!

Check your throttle linkage. Take off the intake pipe going to the throttle body and see if the butterfly plate is fully closed when the gas pedal is up. Then have some one step on the gas (while the car is not started of course) and see if the plate opens fully, then let off the gas pedal and see if the plate closes all the way.

Maybe your throttle cable frayed. It should move easily.

there is also a plastic cover over the throttle cable and it is all broken up maybe it could be snagging somewhere?
