so i have been smokin a little after running it hard with a few quick pulls and stop and let it sit and idle for like 5 min. and it starts to smoke now i was wondering if this was due to the oil temp getting to hot and causing it to burn or what? ### i know i am lookin in to getting a external oil cooler.. just kinda wanting some input on what it maybe caused from?

What color is the smoke the sweet smell and white will be coolant and oil of course is raunchy smellin! How much boost you runnin on it? Could be turbo or a head gasket starting to give? How many miles on the car need some info before we can give you the best clues to your problem

the motor is freshly built still under 6k miles and running on e85 right now at 32psi

tuned for e85 right now with dsmlink v3

as for the smoke its a whitish grey color and i doubt its the head gasket ### it don't smell i did have a coolant smell but that was due to my thermostae being stuck open

What does the exhaust smoke smell like?

I'm guessing you did the basics of checking for shaft play, water in oil, oil in water, etc?

possibly to much dead time on the injectors.... I was having some smoke under boost and idleing when I was trying to tune my car..... after getting the injectors dialed in better , my deadtime was a little higher than suggested, the smoke went away... except on cold starts .....

the turbo is like brand new and no shaft play or water in the oil or anything, and i dunno i gotta figure this out i am gunna get that oil cooler and play with the timing a lil more just hard right now with all this snow

Whitish grey smoke has nothing to do with fueling or running rich. If it was black smoke then you have a fueling problem.

You are either burning coolant or oil. It could be as simple as a PCV valve, or you might have much deeper internal issues. You need to do more diagnostics.

No.

Dont let oil or coolant levels fool you. It takes only a tiny bit of oil burning to create a lot of smoke, and coolant levels will fluctuate depending on if your car is hot or cold.

You need to describe the smell of the smoke the best you can.

Well...

If it smells like it's burning oil...
...it's probably burning oil.

Compression test and leak down test it and report back.

..... the smoke i had was a grey/ clear color, and it did turn out to be fuel adjustment... when your pushing that much power and boost a little smokage is not that uncommon....plus your running some seriouse fuel mods ,and its hard to get it spot on when the whole system is aftermarket,

I say make some fuel adjustments, 1st. double check to make sure fuel pressure is set at what its setup for in link...

Grey clear? I've also seen higher hp cars do the same thing. A lot of times it's leftover carbon deposits and impurities getting burned off from the higher temps of a hard pull.

This sounds like an oil burn though.

OP, shoot a video and/or get crackin on some diagnostics.

so after futher researching in to my problems on what may be causing this i am gunna start small and go from there and im thinking it may be my pcv valve so i am deciding wether to replace it or just elimitate it and run a catch can to relieve some crank case pressure? any info if this would be the better rout to go?

I have this same problem, but not on a DSM. On a different turbo'd car I own. To tell if it's the turbo, I hear the dead give away is take off some intake piping and look for oil traces (after the turbo). Someone told me shaft play didn't matter.

For PCV, same thing. Take it off and look for oil traces. My car had some, I made an oil catch can like this one here:

Except the one Lowe's sells now, has a metal case with slits to see through. So +1 to durability?

I caught tons of oil, especially after 7-9k shifts, but it didn't stop my white oil burning while idle at the next red light.

I might compression test it, but I'm most likely going to just move onto a DSM hopefully.

Not trying to jack a thread but a quick reply would be nice. I'm starting to smoke blueish color like if i were to rev it it would smoke a little bit after the rev and it blows a lot of smoke during and after boost. The thing is the turbo has excessive shaft play like if i were to pull and push in and out of the comp housing like enough to make a clunking sound but the cold or hot side wheel isn't coated in oil. the car is parked due to dogbox racing building me a transmission and I'm going to replace the turbo with a 16g but do you think my oil burning issue is the turbo? car has 120,000 on motor.

:confused::confused::confused:
