hello
i just got me another dsm a few days ago it all stock 1 owner car it a 96 eclipse with 93000 act miles on it. the car was adult owned and never abused in anyway i have all service records for the car and its in excellent shape dam near mint inside and out. it has a 420a motor and auto trans. the car is really cheap on gas and i want to keep it that way i was just wanting to know if any of you have any ideals on tunnig or tweaking this car to get the most out if it with out changing parts? what i need to do this? how to go about tunning and programming ect? i'm goinng to make this my daily driver and the wife can drive this car she cant drive my 5 speed.
thanks rick.

You cannot tune or program the stock Chrysler ECU. Do some of the extended maintenance mentioned around here (cleaning IAC, TB, adjusting throttle and throttle cable, making sure you are using NGK's, Seafoam/MCCC treatment, et cetera...)

I would recommend you looking at MSnS (alot of gains to be seen there) but if you don't care to change parts, you wouldn't care to install the MS.

hello locke
thanks for the reply. why cant you reprogram the stock ecu? if it has a eprom where it is sorder in or not looks to me like it could be desordered and a socket replace and a new programed eprom replace? like i said this is the first 420a dsm that i have owned and i really like the car and i like the auto trans for daily driving. for what it is the thing runs great to be box stock i just think it could be quicker. locke if you cant program the stock ecu can you get a replacement for it that can be reprogramed? also in the first post when i said with out changing parts i was sorta meaning like having the head rework, cams, turbo, ect. done got one like that with a 5 speed in it and it screams. i just want to get the 420a running the best it can with stock internals as for header, fuel system with injectors something like that i dont mined doing but any and all help on this feel free i need it.
thanks.

Because no one has replacement chips, nor do they know how to reprogram the stock chip. The stock ECU uses a complicated system of checksums to determine everything is functioning properly. Not only is the source code absolutely unobtainable, if you were to modify the code without a lot of planning, nothing would work because the checksum wouldn't add up.

hey paul
thanks for the reply that was something i did not know. so how do you get around this? what other ways are there as for tunning?
also the first reply by locke he mentioned the MS was he talking of the megasquirt?
thanks rick.

ps thanks paul for that info.

The 1997 ECU can be flashed/programmed by Howell, and there was one guy in Brazil somewhere that successfully flashed one 2gnt ECU, but he has been off the map for years. Even if you did socket it for a reprogrammed eprom, there is no information generally available as to how to flash it, or what you would flash on it. The Howell AF/X ECU will only work on the '97 cars, and if you had the gumption to figure out and rewire your '96 so that the AF/X would function, you might as well have installed MegaSquirt. Read http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220504 for MegsSquirt (MS/MSnS) information.

SAFC's are useless to us, and other options like the AEM require modification to function.

Hope that answered your questions.

edit: I'm slow today.

just today? :D

couple of easy mods to help you get noticable gains, because tuning/altering your factory ECU is insane with the lack of information available on the Motorola chip used in it.

Hollow out the catalytic converter, get an AF/X UDP, and put a cheap short ram on it with a K&N filter. Those are the probably the 3 best bang for the buck cheap mods.

hello
well i changed all fluids ,motor oil and filter ,trans fluid and filter i also used lucus oil in the both of them. changed the plugs and wires, put on a cold air intake system on the car also removed the cat and replace it. nothing to restrict it now. car runs out good are there anything you can do to change the shifting point on these trans? the trans shifts great but anything above 90 mph you cant keep the od from coming in even with the od buttom on the shifter turned off it still comes in on it after you hit 90 or better anyone ever had this problem?
thanks rick.

From now on, I definately recommend you DO NOT use any additives like Lucas in your engine or transmission. Especially the transmission. The owners manual specifically states do not use any additives. Just keep that in mind next time you change the oil or do a tranny fluid & filter change.

Look into IPT for trans mods. Also, i agree with the above. DO NOT use the trans additive EVER. It's terrible. Also, the Oil additive has a tendancy to foam in the crankcase, which, is VERY bad.

Just use a good atf with a black bottle of lube guard. And a good synth. oil. Mobile works awesome for me.

(I know i'm not an n/t, but this is kinda universal info)

I think the overdrive has to come on at 90mph because your running out of the 3rd gear for it to function. So it switches to its final gearing.

And if your not bothering to change out parts, then ipt is gonna be way outta of question.

well i found a few things out about the car for one it was running in open loop bucause it did not have a thermastat in it. the ecu look at the car never warming up and it did'nt never got over 140 maybe 160 if it was really hot out. i replace the thermastat and out the temp up where it should be and the car is running great trans even shifts better i guess the tcm was doing the same as the ecu an looking at the motor and tranny not warming up i guess but it sure working good now. i also have a MS on the way for the car.
thanks rick.
