okay i know i can get this done for free at the dealership but i really dont want thoes people working on my car.

with that being said has anyone actually done it themselves. with the parts given it looks kinda difficult and im just really looking for some pointers. i already looked at the plymouth laser for it but it doesnt really give much detail on how to do it. any help or pointers will be appreciated.

thanks in advance

I don't remember exactly what was included with the T-case recall, it's just a new yoke and a new U-joint correct? If that's all it is, then it shouldn't be too difficult.

Remove all of the circlips on the u-joint. If you have a bench vise and some large sockets you can press the U-joint bearing caps out partially, and then use pliers to pull them the rest of the way out. Do that to all 4 bearing caps of the U-joint, then the joint should just slide out if you push it to one side of the yoke. Installation is pretty straightforward once you take it apart. It should take you less than 2 hours unless you get a U-joint that's stubborn to remove. In that case use some PB blaster, Kroil, WD40, etc.

I'm almost positve there is a VFAQ on this, that describes U-joint removal in detail. Is that what you were referring to?

It might also include a new seal for the rear of the transfer case.

Steve

10 steps ahead of you steve. i figured while i was down there i would take the driveshaft off and replace the u-joint, fill the carrier bearings with caulk, and replace the seal for the x-fer case.

btw steve great work on my buddy scotts ecu. i fried it pretty good and you did a great job fixing my mistake:thumb:

thanks for the help guys

just a sugestion...I might be wrong but this is what the dealership said to me!
I wanted a friend to help me out with that...but if the TC goes bad again I heard that the dealership can refuse you in the future with the recall.
I just took mine to the dealership..and they slapped on a new TC :) and they give you a special paper that you present it next time ...if it ever goes bad.
Very cool guys at the Mitsu. dealership in Grand Rapids, MI. They even let me test drive a EVO for 2h while I was waiting for my car :)

damn thats awesome. when i was there they were talking to me about the recall and some of the words that came out of his mouth was "we might even have to replace the X-fer case case with a new one"

Mine locked up the wheels on me doing 70 MPH :) rear wheels blocked...it's something like your gf pulling the handbreak on you without telling you 1st :) I thought I'm done living at that point...made it ok...not injured, just a rim/tire got messed up, and my gf bitching for 3days at me :)
But yeah..the dealership put a brand new TC in it...it's the shiniest thing on my car LOL, and they did the safety belt recall thing for the 1990 model also.

Transfer case recall? Wow, that was a LONG time ago. I'm just curious, how did your car not get this done before? Anyway, what do you have to fear from a dealership if its free? I don't see what they are going to make worse. I say go for the free dealership work.

I got the most like messed up GSX EVER!!
My car is sooo stock it even has the original stickers on IT, and cassete player !:)
This guy had the car in a BARN, and the dust was sooo thick on it that it took me 3 days to clean it up :)
I should've know better then to drive it like it was and chk for open recalles...I just assumed they were all done...wrong..:)
Now it's parked and I'm cheking every single wire, and part of the car, before I move it again! :)

well the main reason is because i dont have time. i drive this car everywhere everyday! if i had another car to get me around i would be game! but i dont:beatentodeath:

alright just getting back to this thread. me and the g/f went out and did the transfer case recall yesterday. only took about an hour only because we had a press. it was pretty damn simple and if you follow the vfaq or plymouth laser its pretty straight foward once you get the driveshaft off to take a look at what your looking at.

hope that helps
