I had grinding in my left rear wheel, and it turned oiut to be a bad hub bearing assembly, so I shoot down and get a replacement..

I ge the rotor off, and now faced with the hub with the wheel bolts attached to it.

I took the bolts off the rear of the wheen (the 4 big ones).

But the dang thing still won't come off. Am I missing a bolt, or a special tool? or should I just whack the crap outta it until it falls off.

Help!

Arg, wasn't this hard in my other cars. LOL

thanks in advanced

If you removed the four bolts on the back, my memory is a little hazy, but I believe that is the only thing holding on the hub assumbly to the knuckle.

Just use a bit of force. :)

There is a large nut on the outside you have to remove also, this holds the axle. Once you remove the larger bolt, There is a little dimple in the center of the axle on the outside, use a tap and place it in the dimple and tap the axle out.

Last time even 20 tones hydraulic press couldn't budge on those, so don't hold your hopes too high. Since your car is 96, the axle and hub probably have quite a tight grip that you might not be able to break apart without some serious damage to the axle portion.

You could loose the wheel side rubber portion and separate the axle shaft from the outer end. Then you could take it out from the knuckle and try separation process in a bit easier way. Still, don’t expect too much either way. Get that outer part of the axle from the dealer (less then $200), hub you already have, put it together and forget about the headache.

Did it today. What a pain. Cold Chisel at the spot where the hub assembly mates up with the knuckle. Worked around the thing for about an hour. Now I have to do the other side. Crap.

Well, got it all apart..

And now I can't get the actual hub off the rest of the "Axle"

And the teeth are screwed up (the part for the ABS), And no amount of torque can get the damn assembly to come apart!

Soooo, now I just wanna get a whole new frigging hub assembly (not just the hub itself)

Anyone know of a good place to look for this dang thing? And what it's actually called?

Thanks!

I couldn't get the CV shaft removed from the hub when I had to replace my CV joint. I ended up going to a machine shop and asked them to press out the shaft. They ended up bending the shaft and toasting the hub . I went to a guy who rebuilt the entire CV unit(inboard and outboard) for about $60. Then I bought a new hub from Satan.

The passenger side I am just going to take the hub and CV shaft to the rebuid guy and have him just throw away hub and the outer portion of the CV unit. Since the hub is going bad and the CV shaft is pretty much toast from rust anyway.

Next time just bring it to a machine shop.

Napa Axles are cheap. I got mine for like 60 bucks.

If your car has ever seen snow, you will never get those axles out.

Wierd, each time I've had to replace the hub assemblies on both my DSM's, the axles came out smooth as butter.

What's your secret????

Mine pushed out without any effort too. I am thinking that somebody in the past was nice enough to grease these babys up at some point.

Just wanted to let ya know I just ordered a whole new hub assembly, only cost me 120 bucks, and it slid right in.. All better.

Sometimes.. just SOMETIMES.. it's just better to spend the extra cash and save yourself a ton of frustration :)

Oh btw. WTF is up with autozone not knowing wtf our fuel filter part number is? They gave me the wrong one twice now..

The $@%@%$#5.

The secret? After you fight tooth and nail with the assy., reinstall it with antiseize. Makes like MUCH easier the next time.
