Ok I have been working on this for 3 months and cant figure out the problem. First my tsi awd gets terrible (1/2 tank 60 hw miles)
gas milage and my main concern is when I push the pedal any where for 3/4 to full throttle the car shutters a little and backfires till i let of the throttle. It feels like a ignition miss. I have replaced the fuel pump(190 rewired) fuel filter,new plugs, wires( 2 sets to see if they were bad) o2 sensors,coil packs, and tested it many times for
boost leaks. I even had satan try to figure it out while they replaced my timing belt. They spent a day trying to figure it out and then gave up. They also said the injectors were cutting out under full throttle but didnt know why.

My car is a 95 auto Tsi Awd with 63k on it.
My mods are 14b, upper and lower IC pipes, 1g bov,
TMO stage 3 chip, supra IC, 3"o2 housing-exhaust, 190 fp. But I
had this prob with the stock IC, t-25,o2 housing and euc as well.

I have no idea what to do next. Please give me some ideas. Thanks:)

you have a blown head gasket... i know because my car was doing the same thing.. i tried EVERYTHING .. and none of it worked.. puled the head gasket out .. and it was leaking in 8 spots.. and now i have the FP RED and the stock head gasket doesnt like 29 psi so its doing it again.. and i know its the head gasket again.. im replacing it w/ the cometic one.... any questions.. email me at [email protected]

Thanks Rsktakr. Im going to do a compression test in the next few days to see if I do have a leaky head gasket. Wouldnt my car be smoking out of the exhaust though. Thanks

Could me ecu be bad:confused: It look fine when I took it out and put in the chip last month. THe caps didnt appear to be bad. If so could I pull the ecu out of my gf's eclipse gs-t and switch or do I need a 95 ecu to replace it with . THanks:talon:
 
everytime my head gasket has been blown my car never smoked or anything. it would only leak under hard boost around 5400 rpms+, so you could still have a bad head gasket and it only starts to sputter at 5k + rpms and stil have a good compression reading.. mine did, and when i took it apart the gasket was leaking in 8 spots. if she has the same type of dsm you can swap ecus and see if thats what it is... you never know.. steven:talon:
 
i would definitly check the maf that happend to me it felt like my car was always stuck in 3rd gear and i got horrible gas milage, most manuals like chiltions and haynes have a way you can test all of this, another thing that worked for me once when my car started acting up i disconected the negative battery terminal for the night and reconected it in the morning, sounds simple but it worked and havent had problems since.
 
I swaped the maf out of my gf's gs-t and I didnt help. Satan checked the mas when I brought it in too.

I noticed today that when I start the car up after sitting all night the problem hardly exists for the first few minuites but then the stutter/backfire kicks in after the engine warms up a little.


Also the prob started when I installed a mbc whick might have been letting to much psi (cheap ebay mbc)in at the first time driving with it in because the problem instantly started then. I quickly returned it to stock and it has been doing this ever since. Mabey too much boost for a second caused the head gasted to leak? any thoughts:talon:
 
Well, you said its throwing code. USE A DATALOGGER!!! If its too much $, opt for the laptop one and you only have to buy the cable for like $35. Freeware software with it! See if your friends have one first though. :thumb:

Its throwing an egr code. Thats it. I replaced the 95 ecu with an 96 and the prob got a little better but it still stutters/backfires???????


Not a head gastket leak either(did lead down test and compression test)

It also got a little better when I put on irridum ngk plugs. I dont have a data logger.


Any other ideas:confused:
 
You still having the bad gas milage cause mine is terrible. Honestly I go through a tank of gas in under 100 miles and its just killing me. Where can you get the labtop cord for 35 bucks?? I def would do that.

Any updates on this yet? My 92 awd laser is doing the same thing. It sputters when i get up into the higher rpms. I did most of the 'fixes' for it, new plugs/wires, fuel filter etc and no luck :-/
 
did any of u guys fix your cars because I had the same problem i fixed with plugs and wires and I had a few boost leaks but now the problem is back and I dont know what it is
 
o2 sensor I dont know but I changed my fuel filter and I have 3'' turbo back exhaust with hi-flow cat im gonna check the coil pack today also can u see if the spark plugs are firing simply by pulling the boot off and cranking the engine?
 
My 1990 used to have a similar problem. The engine would cut out at high RPM's or whenever it made boost for more than 1 or 2 seconds. I had great fuel pressure, but no volume. The problem was a clogged filter on the bottom of the fuel pump itself. Just for craps and farts you may want to check that filter, mine was nasty and flowing very poorly causing me to hate my car for about a month :thumb: .
just a thought.

i bet you have the same problem im having, i took my car in and the guy told me that the injectors were clogged because the gas i was using was crap, now i have to get gas from moble, bp, or amaco. after a few tanks of that i am taking my car in to get the injectors and my fuel rail flushed out. the diagnostic guy pretty much garanteed that that would get my car running back to normal. Oh yea i know exactly what your talking about when you get on the throttle with the backfire and the stuttering, my car does the same thing...not cool :thumbdown
