Im getting ready to pull my 2g 7 bolt out of my 97 manual tranny GST, due too a spun rod bearing.
The engine I will be dropping in is out of a 97 Tsi awd with auto tranny. Its very nice, awesome compresion, and very low miles, not to forget it was out of a completely stock car for a smoking deal. So i dont want to hear the 6 bolt should of, could of comments.LOL

As far as I know the engines are exactly the same. And it should be an exact swap.
But just to make sure. Will there be anything I will need to change/mod/fab? This is my first engine swap so i don't exactly no all the info of doing one.

Questions:
Will my ECU connect right up with no fab work even tho its a different type tranny?
Will my flywheel match right up to a engine out of a auto?
Do i need to change oil pans since it was awd and im fwd?

Also i was reading something on cams. Is it true that there are more milder cams for the autos? Or is that just a 1g thing? If it is true, will i be losing power since my car originally had a manual tranny engine?

thanks to everyone in advance:thumb:

1. The ECU is NOT affected since all you're doing is an engine swap.
2. Just make sure you use the correct flywheel as there's a difference between the FWD and AWD flywheels.
3. The only difference in oil pans is between the 6 bolt and 7 bolt.

The motors are the same whether it's an auto or manual (in a 2G). You might be thinking about the 1G that uses different injectors between the auto and manual.

I would suggest to bag-n-tag all fasteners, parts, hose ends, and electrical connections. Take detailed notes and pictures along the way. They will prove invaluable especially if the project goes on longer than expected (which they usually do).

Thanks for the help you answered all my question.
oh and i will be using my flywheel i curretnly have as long as it will bolt up. And ya i thoght it was just a 1g thing, just wanted to confirm. thanks again

Yes your existing flywheel from your GST will bolt up to the engine from the TSi AWD.

Unless already done, you will need to remove the "ring" that slides into the crank. You will notice if the crank is flat, or if the ring is still in there, as it looks like a pilot bearing. Some slide right out, but more times than not, are a pain to get out.
