Let me start from the beginning.
I have a 96 Eclipse GS

I was planning a trip out to vegas and I figured I should get an oil change and replace my rear 2 tires because they were completely bald.

They let me know that my spark plugs were bad and they were going to charge me $70 for them. I figured I didn't need them desparately because my car was running fine. But as soon as I left the car was shaking and misfiring so I ended up going to Kragen and doing it myself.

The drive out to vegas was fine until we stopped about 2.5 hrs at Baker for a bathroom break. I hear this rattling when I slow down, the rattling sound was coming from the timing belt/cam area.

I just took a chance and drove out to vegas because when I was going fast it would go away.

My car ended up dying in vegas and they towed it to a shop out there. They took it apart and thought it was a bad engine (i already replaced the engine 2 years ago). The tensioners were the culprits making the rattling sound, the rubber bearnings were completely chewed out.

They asked if I wanted to replace the water pump because they were replacing the timing belt and the tensioners anyway. I really didn't want to spend more money unless I needed to and when I asked they said the water pump looked pretty new, (I know they replaced the belt & water pump when they replaced the engine) so I just had them replace the belt and the tensioners.

I left my car with them in vegas and got a rental car back to LA. I went back last night to pick it up and it was running great until I started it after work.

It now makes this high pitched hissing.. hot kettle whistling sound when i start it. Then it stops. I just awnted to get home so I drove it 30 miles through traffic. It's quiet when i'm 2000+ rpms but between 0-1999 rpms it hisses.. sputters.. and the sound chokes up a bit right before it shuts up..

It started to smell like something was burning towards the end..
I realy don't want to go and get screwed over again.. i know I didn't ned to spend $800 for the timing belt & tensioners.

If anyone knows how to fix this probelm let me know!! I know I personally won't be able to do it but if I at least have some knowledge of what's going on it would be better than where i'm at now.

is it hard to take the cover off?
I've done minor work to the car but nothing too major.

how will I know what is wrong?

what am I looking for?

If you smell somthing burning that is more than likely the timing belt. If you dont know how to work on the car its best not too or more damage may be done. You should call that shop you had the work done at ad tell them. It sounds like they didn't do somthing right. You also should not drive the car because if it breaks than your valves more than likely will be bent.

sounds like it may just be one of teh accessory belts, the tensioner for one of those may be loose and causing the belt to squeal, u would hav a buning smell of rubber from that
