Last night when i got home from work i shut the car off and went inside to get a shower, then got back into the car to go get something to eat. When i started the car up it would not go into 5th or reverse.. it was like it was completely locked out, and the shifter didnt feel smooth moving it side to side in neutral.

Then me and my dad went and worked on it, he was banging on the part of the linkage that goes into the transmission, and it locked out all the gears and the shifter would not move at all. So i started the car up and found that it was in reverse so i backed the car out and pushed on the shifter hard and it went into neutral? Then after playing with it i got it to go into all the gears fine, and now its working just like it was before with no problems at all its shifting easy and smooth just like it should but reverse seems to need a little tug to go in thats the only problem? Does anyone have any idea on what could be happening???? its just one problem after another with this car..:confused::confused:

Could be a tob issue, clutch, transmission issue, or linkage problems. I would inspect everything to make sure its all good in the drivetrain, again could be a number of things going on here, or going out..

I checked all the linkage inside the car under the console and it all seems to be working properly, my dad thinks it something inside the transmission that could be going bad, but i just dont see how it would just happen all of a sudden?

As for the clutch what could it be causing? it still feels the same as it always have and after I took it out after it was working again it help under wot and when i shifted quickly it worked just as it should.

And what is a TOB? LOL excuse my ignorance

I am going to bet it is in the trans as well.
Either the detent balls, the housing itself or the selector shafts.
Have you checked the trans fluid level & condition?

yeah sounds like throw out bearing is seized or a pinched clutch cable if clutch isnt depressing you wont get the transmission into gear.. if it is only partially depressed you will have trouble getting into 1 or 2 gears but with 5th and reverse being bad first it sounds more like the spring and ball lock maybe has a flat spot... do like everyone else has said and double check everything.. have someone shift around while watching the shifter cables to make sure they are working then go farther into the mechanicals... good luck..

A clutch cable? I wasn't aware we had these.

Here is a quick way to tell if it is the transmission of the clutch/clutch adjustment. When the car is off shift it thru the gears and see how it feels. Now start it and see if it feels the same way. It it feels different than your clutch isn't releasing all the way. If it is the same than you have something wrong internally which would make sense because 5th and reverse are both controlled by the same shift rail. By the way, don't be beating the transmission linkage, that can cause more damage than you already have.

This is very strange and similar symptom I had before a roll pin in my third gear snapped with a light force shift no load, shifter fork broke derailed from shifter rail and locked me in 3rd gear until dissassembly. My symptom happened when I first pulled into my work and I was locked in first gear trying to shift to second it wouldn't go anywhere, no other gear would engage. Turned off the car, shifted car into neutral and cycled through all gears a few times started up and ran great besides a new slight grind into reverse. 300 miles later it popped after a 6 hour drive to cincinati rolling out of a Walmart. I had short throw, billet base bushings, bones red bearings for shifter rails ends, new oem tb, fulcrum ball, clutch slave, clutch master, -3an braided line, oem shifter cables, and fresh GM syncromesh. With the horror stories I've heard with GM syncromesh, I assume it may have been a big role in how much wear there was upon inspection. Used that fluid for 4k miles, changed it out again and then 1000 miles later boom. Tranny was fwd and had 67xxx miles on it no grinds. So it just had to blow the day after my first symptom on an important trip. Could've totally taken the 300c but nope.

I can't say that's it but sounds earily similar.

I would start by inspecting your clutch master and slave for leaks and bleed any air trapped in the clutch line. Essentially, make sure the clutch pedal is disengaging the pressure plate.

I personally belive its in the clutch but my dad still thinks its inside the transmission iddk im going to do some more searching and this weekend take another look at everything and see whats up and ill let everyone know whats up

I checked it and it feels the same when its off and on.. the only thing im not getting is since i got it fixed yesterday ive put about 70 miles on the car and i was beating it the whole time and it feel perfect? like nothing every happened, idkk this is very weird its almost as if it never happened WTF

Hooraw.. sounds like a dsm to me... fixed until the next problem drive it till its broke again dsm for life right...

So do you still not have 5th and reverse? IF some gears work and others don't than it is a problem inside the transmission. If it were a clutch problem it would do the same thing in every gear and the problem would be there with the car running, but go away with the car not running.

Well mine is doing the exact same thing. But more frequently and at times not its an issue. From what I found its probably a combination of wear and out of spec parts. I know the big nuts that hold the gear clusters tight in our OEM transmissions can work loose and cause issues. Until 3rd started acting up I was going to try and tighten them up and see how that worked.

If all your other unknowns become known and aren't the problem then it's probably inside the transmission. I had clutch drag after I got my car and didn't notice until 8 months or so after I got it. It was so slight I didn't notice it. However as hard to notice as it was its a constant strain on the syncros and eventually the wear shows through and shifting becomes more problematic.

The big shaft nut that holds the gear clusters on (located right behind the 5th gear cover) is the exact reason why my transmission finally popped, I realise now that I didn't have that in my previous post. This nut was retourqed by me the first time I ever added gm syncormesh, I think after that a ton of wear started happening (concluded during tear down) and finally got enough slop to break a roll pin off my 3rd gear shifter fork. Both nuts were finger loose during tear down :(

Please OP I suggest if you did feel an intermittent loss of shift capability and it wasn't anything to do with the clutch and its system, go take off the 5th gear cover (held on with 4 or 5 bolts off the passenger side of tranny) and pray those nuts don't turn by hand like both of mine did. If they do just tightening them up will only prolong the inevitable if they got loose from wearing issues.

As stated before, I lost shifting on a Thursday, came back, kind of felt sloppy and notchy in reverse, took a 300 mile trip, shifted into third lightly partial throttle, never came out of 3rd again until dissassembly.

No i have everything back again its working perfectly as if nothing ever even happend? thats whats conrfusing me because if something would have broken it wouldnt be working perfectly as it is now, and i spent all day riding around beating the s*** out of it and shifting hard and everything is holding up fine and working great
