Help!! Rusty New Cams What Can I Do!!

i have brand new cams that i bought but they some how got wet and now got rusty!!

what can i do or are they garbage??

Try a rush remover like Evapo-rust magic rust remover or something.

Depends on how bad the rust is. Is it surface rust? Take a fine emery cloth and go to work on it.

its surface rust but a bit of pitting started im cleaning it with fine emery cloth then im going to soak them in oil over night and try some rust remover

Not if they arrived packaged properly and weren't rusted when the box was opened.


How did they get wet, and long did they sit?

If it's just surface rust and the pitting is minor, you should be fine once you get them cleaned up and oiled. If the rust is bad enough that you have deformed the lobe profile or no longer have a smooth surface for the rocker roller...you may be out of luck.

Probably wouldn't hurt to find a set of decent callipers and measure the lobe profiles, and compare them to the spec card.

Get them cleaned up and post up some pics.

Well if it was extreme psi they would probably help you out, just because that's how they are.

Was it insured? If it is call the post office and bi***.
When my stuff gets messed up in the mail all the post master does is puts an F*** I'm sorry sticker on it and says how tough their job is.

You'd probably spend more getting them reground than you could get new ones for, and you'd end up with "less" cam.

Do what I suggested before worring about regrinds or replacing them... you may be worried over nothing

ill have to get some pics up tomorrow but you can feel some pitting in them but after they are ran a bit im thinking they might be able to get away with just using them.

you can feel the rough parts on the cams so im hoping that it will just wear off in time

Why do you say this?

If they are pitted that badly, and you are thinking they will wear themselves smooth... where do you think all the little metal flakes are going to end up if they do?

Cams are pretty hard, and they aren't likely to wear down any time soon unless the metal is softened from corrosion. If the pitting is excessive and they are to that point, you are better off getting some different ones.

I would bet they arent rusted that bad after only a week. Reminds me of the time my buddy dropped his crank for his SBC build. It dented it slightly through the plastic and began rusting. We told him to stop messing with it and he didnt listen

take a dremel with a wire wheel and see how deep she goes.

not that deep its more less outer rust done cleaned up and pics will be up in a bit

Do what I did. I had more than just surface rust. I took it to a machine shop and for 15 bucks all I have now is a little pitting. Barely any at all though and they are working fine. No marks being left on the rockers at all. Don't sweat it at all if it is surface rust but let a machine shop do it for you, what is 15 dollars? Oh, mine where bc 272's .

I personally wouldn't worry about it at all. Think about what all your motor will sit through when you get it running and especially if it sits outside or something. Hell even in a garage, look at the moisture that is pulled in. Whatever you do don't take a dremel to a new set of cams (I'm sorry but some people just don't think before they speak)

If you feel that somehing needs to be done, get some Chlorinated Brake Cleaner and spray it down and easily/slowly work that into the lobes with a rag or soft nylon brush or even a sponge.
