I just did my cam seals and i broke loose all of the cam caps so I could correctly torque everything back to spec. I did not pull my cams out, I just took off the two end caps to insert the new seals then loosened all of the cap bolts (did not remove or switch any of them). I saw a post that had the order theyre supposed to be tightened in but i cannot find that post now and out of the two books i have, one did not show the order and the other it did not give a number sequence that included the end caps, also it was for a 1.8 which is not my motor. Can someone point me in the right direction or give the diagram so i can print it off and look at it while im doing. This isnt something that i wanted to wing because i know the importance of getting this right so please dont flame me. Thanks, Adam

I believe it said to start from the third cap from the clutch side and then work to the front but am i supposed to include the end caps or do those last. i have that page open now. its the numkber 6 bearing caps that i took off and then i loosened all the rest to torque everything back up to spec. do i start from the middle work to the number six caps and then go and tighten the two left on the clutch side on each cam?

You can just do one cam at a time. As long as your starting from the center, tightening them all down little by little in that sequence - you will keep the pressure even enough across the cam that it will not hurt anything.

See, now if you went to tighten one cap to the torque spec, youre going to have problems.

EDIT - Pic attached.

LOL thank you ill give you reps when i find out how LOL

so do you torque each one to spec in that order or did you just do it little by little untill you reach 15ft/lbs. also right below the 9 and ten bolts on the picture is there no order for those or is just because you do those last. thank you for the picture that was the one i was looking for.

Little by little. Like I stated before if you torque #1 all the way down then go to #2 and so on, youre going to break things.

That pic is for a 420a but its the same sequence for a 4g63. I was just showing you that you just start in the center and work your way out.

Echo of what everyone else has said- it's more important that you try to do it evenly than in a given order. That is, turn each cap's nut tow or three turns, all the way across on each cap, and repeat until they're all the way down.

well as soon as I get done with this 14 hour work day it will be done I appreciate the help guys and if you feel like donating a 264/272 cam setup you know where to find me :)

you can if you want.

But make sure the bolts and holes are clean of oil, cause if you put loctite on oily bolts/threads its not gonna do any good.

edit*

i quickly read your post and thought you said loctite.

NO i would not run antiseize on those bolts. Never had a problem cracking them open.

They're only supposed to be torqued to 14 ft*lbs. And the bolts I believe are black nitrided but don't quote me on it. The manual doesn't say anything about coating the bolts so install them with clean, dry threads.

Back from the grave, would you use anti seize on the cam cap bolts?? I've heared some people do it and some people don"t..
Nope, install them dry. With their duty and at their torque spec, they don't require any type of lubricant, anti-sieze, or loctite.
