My car and my bank account are ready for a turbo upgrade. I can't decide what to get though, and would like some suggestions. My last car had a Buschur 20G that would spool 20psi at 3600 (stock cams), it was fun but not tuned and not fast.

I had the privelage of driving a 450 awhp (on a Dyno Dynamics) 2G that had an FP3065 setup, E85, stock 6 bolt, and 272s. I was very happy with the performance.

I honestly am trying to shoot for 400awhp on a DD dyno using E85.
I am OK with a ~4000 RPM spool.
I have been looking for a slightly used FP3065, no luck. And I really don't want to shell out $1500 for just the turbo.

I am really interested in trying a Holset with the BEP .55 a/r housing, but can't decide which to go with (35 vs 40)

So far my thoughts:
FP 3065
HX35 or 40 with BEP .55 housing

Thanks!

The holsets are almost bullet proof. They have very strong center section in them and they can take alot of abuse. I have had my HX35 for about five years now. There is no more shaft play in it now than there was the first day it was installed.

I'd say go with the hx35, it cheap and very efficient. It'll spool very easily and with e85 you'll get 400 awhp no problem. And there is one for sale in the classifieds right now.

An HX35 on e85 can get your 400awhp + alot more plus a slightly better spool time than the 40 and much cheaper than the FP turbo. As stated, there are some for sale in the classifieds right now with the BEP housings

Thanks guys, I emailed one seller about an HX35. I guess I was just worried about getting a 35 and then deciding a 40 would have been better.

not a problem. We wuouldn't steer another DSMr wrong.

Have you thought about a borg warner turbo setup like a s256 with a 55ar. The spool on those turbos are awesome and they hit hard, would get you to 400 or more on that turbo, but depends on what your budget is? I myself am not a fan of holset turbos, you can get the same power or more without sacrificing spool with a borg warner turbo

Ball-bearing turbos are hard to find used. Its seems like no one ever parts with them until they're destroyed, and if they DO decide to sell them they ask top dollar, which is unreasonable. Although, I do know someone that just sold a SBR GT14 for a HELL of a good price....probably would've been mine if I didn't have an HX40 for my AWD.

There's a fairly decent gap between the HX35 and HX40. It's not like trying to choose between a 16G and 18G.....more like a choice between a Garrett 50-trim and a GT35R. I think you'll be quite satisfied with the HX35's potential.

The HX35 is a great turbo for what you would want and can produce some really high numbers, they were built to run 30 pounds of boost and can easily run 60+ pounds of boost, not implying you will put down that much. The holset's quality in my eyes is better than almost any turbo company out there, and I bought my HX35 rebuilt for 150$.

I just want a nice setup for my car, something that will be able to reach my goal (assuming everything else is working as well as it should). I love how simple the FP setups are, but very pricey. The Holset sounds great, but again I'm worried that I'll be disappointed with it. Ugh, wish there was a local person with a Holset car!

On the Borg Warners, I have considered them but eh. Idk, just doesn't seem to appeal to me. If I'm gonna be spending $1200, why not just get the $1500 Fp3065 I want.

One other thing, on the Garrett BB CHRA's, you really can't rebuild them?

Thanks!

Correct, which is what makes them the most inferior choice in my opinion.

It's one thing if FP is going to service your turbo no matter what happens, but Garrett won't touch one under warranty, so everytime your ball bearing turbo takes a sh!t you're buying a new CHRA to the tune of $800+ (or a replacement CHRA under their exchange program if at least one of your wheels is in good shape). Garrett's opinion is that their product is built so well that if something happens to it, then it must be the fault of the installer / consumer. This is true to a point, but you must remember:

- If your oil supply comes loose and cooks the bearings in the center housing, you're buying a new CHRA.
- If you're a dumbass and run too much oil pressure to the turbo and damage the turbine or compressor seal, you're buying a new CHRA.
- If your engine suffers some type of internal failure that goes undetected for a few hundred miles and you pump the turbo full of metal, you're buying a new CHRA.

All of these situations could be solved by a $150 rebuild on a journal-bearing turbo. Just something to think about.

:) 60psi is WAY off either hx35 compressor map, no matter the flow.

I bought a brand new HX40 with the BEP housing. It's in the mail ;)
