This is about my 98 Rs, I have the weirdest oil leak. 100% its oil. It is leaking on the start of my catalytic converter, making my car look like I'm doin a smoke show. I have used tracer dye to no help.

Only my drivers side get oil on it. What seals are anywhere near the back of the motor? Can this be a rear main seal, and how can I check this since tracer dye didn't help. Also if you look under the car after hard driving you will see the cat's first 2 bolt smoking from oil.

Thanks!

well, first what color is the smoke? white-ish= coolant & Blue-ish= oil.
2and if you knoe how to do a compression test or a leak down test? Alot of people here will request you start there before they can help you any farther.
3rd does your oil look like Chocolate Milk? what you can do also is take your valve cover off & if you see foamy oil then my guess would be HG!

So my guess is HG based on your post & of course your engine heres is why & I Quote 1sweet98talon from 2gnt.com

Becuase when the head was made, the hole was not drilled enough because of either an oil or antifreeze passage being in the way below. This makes the head bolt not seat fully. This is what causes most of the leaky headgaskets to be leaking from the "drivers side toward the firewall" or the "back right". It is a common problem on all 2gnt's. Shaving the bolt makes it shorter, therefore able to fit in the hole without hitting the bottom of the hole. Hopefully someone else can better explain this than me.. It is more of preventative than a mod. But then again I don't know everyone's definition of mod.

also this puts it pretty simple http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=23&topic_id=796&mesg_id=796&page=

If its your rear main seal it would be leaking from in between the block and the transmission bellhousing.

Oil on your catalytic converter means practically nothing since the funneling of air while driving blows the oil everywhere, especially towards the rear of the vehicle.

a couple of common places for 2gnt oil leaks are.

1. Oil Sending Unit.
2. Valve cover gasket
3. Headgasket
4. and never forget to check the simplest place first. the oil filter.

Cool thanks for the help. No "milkshake" for engine oil. blueish smoke. Replaced valve cover gasket, no foamy oil. COmpression is great 200-190-185-200

1. Can't find it. LOL Passangers side?
2. Replaced, check.
3. Eghhh Probably seems like it now.
4. Oil filter/drain plug check.

Also replacing Cam sensor seal. Supposedly those tend to leak too. With good compression is it still likely a HG?

The oil sending unit is on the back of the block. It is actually more towards the drivers side. The sensor on the passengers side is the CPS (crankshaft position sensor).

From What I understand common causes of blue-ish smoke for these cars would be either rings or valve seals. there maybe more thing than that & I am willing to bet some one here may have a few more options. I think a leak down test would determin more. lets up know what the probem ends up being if you figure it out. :thumb:

Bad rings has been ruled out with the compression numbers. Assuming the test was done correctly.

Valve seals usually cause smoking at high rpms or on start up. I thought we where talking about an OIL LEAK dripping onto the cat not burning oil. just to clear things up a little.

Dripping AND burning up on the cat as far as I know. I may have found my source (if its oil) I had to put it in the right section though so link is below.
