Hello all! Newb with a mitsu td06 question.

Hi fellas. I'm hoping you guys can assist me with your knowledge on Mitsu turbos.
First off, I have indeed searched. I wouldn't post unless I felt it necessary. :thumb:
I picked up a MHI td06 from a Fuso truck and I'm hoping to use it on a non-dsm application being a 97 saab 900se turbo. Being that it's a 2.0L I would prefer a smaller turbine housing. The unit I have is stamped "12" which I assume refers to 12cm^2. Where can I source a smaller unit that will swap? I assume they are available?
If the available housings are dsm flanged I don't mind. I weld and will gladly modify the setup where necessary. I just need a smaller cm^2 housing that will fit my td06 for certain.

It sounds like your getting into something that will take a lot of modifying to get it to work. Why are you trying to put a 20g on a saab. Trying to find a smaller housing that will fit the mitsu turbo and saab manifold is going to be very tough. good luck:thumb:

The Saab 2.0 b204 engine can handle over 400 on stock internals. It's a tough engine really. I picked up the car for a good price, modified it a bit, and now I want to upgrade the turbo as part of the process.
I have fabricated many turbo manifolds in the past. I don't mind making one for the Saab. I really only need a suitable turbine housing. Someone must be able to help.
I'm a fan of mitsu turbos. I have a td07 also as well as a t78 on my fd. I just really want to use the td06 on my Saab which I feel it totally possible with some advice from those more versed than myself.
 
You are correct in assuming that the 12 refers to the exhaust being a 12cm2 housing. Why don't you think it would work well? It's very nice for a mid ranged to top end setup.
 
I would call some of the turbo places and see if they have anything. It's not a common thing to use something tht starts that large and find a smaller housing (except for some of the holsets that are becoming popular) But i'm sure some one who builds turbos on a regular basis will know if you cna get a smaller housing setup for that turbine wheel or not.

This is honestly the first "truck sized" MHI turbo i've seen some one pull to use on a smaller motor, that's probably why there's not been a lot of replies. Best of luck with your build and throw us some pics and an update when you get it mounted!

That's not a 20G. It's got a compressor with measurements that match a 17C and a TDO6H turbine. Less compressor flow with same or more lag.

You'll have to use a housing that will accommodate the TDO6H wheel. You may be able to find a DSM style 20G TDO6H turbine housing, but the Ty/Sy TDO6H housing is probably much cheaper and Forced Performace carries it.

Really? You don't think it would be way to laggy? The turbo currently on my car is a garrett t25 but similar Saabs have a slightly larger mitsu td04 (15g or 15t) 5cm^2 or 6cm^2 housing (depending on model)
I just assumed a 12cm^2 being twice the size would be to large. It would be great if I could live with it though.
I'll call some shops as recommended.

Here's some food for thought:

A FP Red 20G (Garrett 60-1 Compressor, clipped TD06H turbine, ported 7cm2 or 8cm2 housing) flows roughly 850cfm @ 18psi compared to the 405cfm of a 14B (14B compressor, TD05H turbine, 6cm2 housing). With that in mind, it's pretty safe to say a FP Red is TWICE as big as a 14B, and using an exhaust housing that is only slightly bigger than that of a 14B.

The turbo you've pictured is from a diesel truck. Diesel engines have two things that our cars don't....displacement, and compression. With all of the added airflow that a diesel engine emits through the exhaust, a larger turbine housing is needed to keep from choking the engine down.

If such a turbo were removed from a 4- or 5-liter diesel with a 17.5:1 compression ratio and installed on a 2.0 liter car with a 8.0:1 compression ratio, you couldn't possibly expect it to perform the same.
 
That's not a 20G. It's got a 17C compressor and a TDO6H turbine.

Okay, then what is it?

The measurements match a 17C. Inducer is 1.900" and exducer is 2.680". We know it's definitely not a 20G. It doesn't even have the paired compressor blades all G series mitsu turbos have.

I've not seen a 17C compressor before this thread, I was mistakenly going on measurements alone. My apologies.
