Ok i just replaced my alternator for several reasons because it was tested and was found to only put out 38 amps under a load. I had a problem with my headunit shutting off at random times mostly while the car was idling and the voltage dropped really low. Then it started to do it while driving. So i replced the alternator with a used one with only 30k on it and the cars voltage is much better but now my headunit shuts off like crazy at random times. I can't tell what causes it. I'll be driving and it will turn off and turn back one 5 or more times within a minute. Several times it completely resets all my settings and other times it just shuts off and restarts and keeps my current settings. It's very strange. I'm thinking i might have a bad battery but it puts out 12.3 volts when the car is off. However i did notice that the top of it is slightly leaking liquid battery acid. Does this have anything to do with it? To me it sounds like a bad ground but is this somehow correlated to my alternator b/c it does it way worse now. I've also noticed that even with my new alternator my voltage is very random, sometimes it get to like 12.6 at idle under a load with the sub going and sometimes it's over 13 volts. My old alternator was the same way but it would drop to below 12 volts often, sometimes even to 10 volts. Has anyone ever experienced this problem. I thought it might be a bad ground on my headunit but it won't do it while the car is off and not running or if i shake the unit itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated :thumb:

Did you get a new battery?
adding better grounds to the car is a must on a dsm. Research a hyper grounding kit or
make your own out of 4 Gage wire and some ring terminals It really makes a difference.
I work in car audio and 99% of the time its a bad ground or a loose connection.
I don't know if it could help but check the belt tention.
it might be loose or something.

here is an odd idea. You mention you have a sub. How many amps are you running? I found that if I tried to use my Headunits remote turn n to kick on more than one amp, it would switch off. I had to run the remote wire to a relay, and use a 12V in to the relay to a fuse box with my amps wired to turn on from it.

its probably the ground. shaking your head unit wont do anything. trace the ground and jiggle it around some, clean it up, or find a new one.

No i didn't get a new battery yet. It does it when the voltage is above an acceptable level. Like it will do it while driving with 13.6 volts. I only have one 10 inch subwoofer with a 200watt amp. It's not that much. I've never expereinced this problem until i installed my new headunit. It's a pretty elaborate headunit i don't remember what model but it's a Kenwood. I'm thinking of making my own ground kit however could i just make a couple extra grounds instead of a whole bunch of them like the ground kit has? BTW can someone please show me a picture or tell me how the ground is hooked up to the negative terminal to the battery. I don't know if this makes a difference but the ground coming off the battery is directly connected to the firewall and then the ground wire coming from the car is also connected to the same firewall. I knw the factory way is hooked up a bit different but i don't remember.
