I've been reading for a while, just now decided to post. Not sure whether to post this here, or in the cylinder head forum, since this is my first post and all, I decided here. Searched the forum, found some general information, but nothing more recent than May. I'm coming from a Honda world, so my DSM knowledge is less than it will be once I'm finished with this project. I apologize in advance for the longwindedness, but I want to convey as much information as possible, to get the best help possible.
Long story short, I lost a T-belt. Less than 40k on it, and the balance shaft belt was intact. Seems the belt itself just decided to shred. Anyway, obviously I bent some valves, apparently all of them judging by the compression tests. No obvious visual damage, but no cylinder had more than 50 psi. I understand the costs involved in a head rebuild like this, but I guess I'm looking for guidance from people who probably have more experience with part manufacturers than I do. I put a tentative list of parts together, with the suppliers and prices, and there are lots of options. So I put it to you, to advise and guide me down the path of rebuilding.
I've decided to completely rebuild the head, from the cams to the guides. Also going to send the head out to be cleaned, polished, port matched, and possibly even ported. Not sure about porting, because it sounds horribly expensive judging by the estimates I've been given. My first question, is how much HP can stock equipment take? Even though OEM stuff isn't the cheapest that I've found. I know the old adage you get what you pay for applies in almost every instance in life, is it worth it to spend the extra money on HKS, when Brian Crower is considerably cheaper, and from what I've heard, good quality stuff as well?
I should add that there are no current plans to rebuild the bottom end at this time. This car has been down long enough as it is, and crankshaft endplay was measured at .004" with a digital dial caliper, so until it gets closer to out of spec, it will stay as it is. There are only 97k miles on the motor as it sits.
My plan initially was Ferrea valves and seals. After doing some research of my own, I've heard they've had quality issues the last year or so. Brian Crower is looking like a really nice alternative, albeit a little more expensive on some things, and signifcantly less on others. most notably in camshafts. Interchagability...Crower valves, with HKS springs and retainers...will that work? I'm sure the possibilities are endless. Pointing out what I've already mentioned, that I've never rebuilt a motor before. Most of the work will be done by myself and a couple of friends. We've all worked on motors before, so it shouldn't be an issue. I'm being told that about the *only* thing we won't be able to do, is install the new valve guides, which is a task that I'm perfectly fine with letting the machine shop perform. Perhaps I'm being vague, but that comes from not knowing exactly what questions to ask. Below I will include a tentative parts list. Critique and offer advice all you want, I will not take offense.
Head, cleaned, polished, port-matched, and possibly ported, valve holes(seats?) cut for 1 mm oversize valves.
Supertech valve guides
Brian Crower SS valves(1mm oversized)
Supertech valve stem seals
Brian Crower valve spring/retainer set
OEM valve locks
Brian Crower 272/272 cams
Balance shaft elimination is being performed at this time
Most of the gaskets are being replaced.
If I've missed anything, feel free to correct me.
