I bought this 92 awd tsi 4 months ago.my car would smoke oil and coolant horribly from engine bay and exaust at running temp.So i jumped to the conclusion that the head gasket was blown givin that its a nice gasket i think it might be a cometic...the turbo is under a year old i wouldnt think it was the seal. oil literally would drip out exaust yes it was oil.
I finally got the head off and the gasket didn look to bad but there was a little coolant pooled on top of the third piston. I checked the third set of valves on bottom of the head and the two exaust valves had build up and one of them looked a hair out of place but idk what a bent valve looks like it looks different than the other ones il put it at that.Id put a pic up but my phone broke(it was a shitty morning LOL). Also the whole valve set looked different between the other valve faces on 1,2, and 4 it was black and a little sooty. but between the faces on the third theres was almost no soot and it looked as if fluid was the reason for this.
On that note i could easily turn the crank by hand
there wasnt knocking coming from within the engine
the top of the piston doesnt look damaged
there was never any loss of power unless i drove the car for more than 15 min it would sometimes die at stop signs. Anybody have an idea?

If your lucky a blown turbo as well. take off the intake and look for oil. After that I'd say maybe valve seals as well.

another way to test the valves, keep the mating surface down and prop up at an angle with 2 blocks of wood. spray some brake cleaner into the intake/exhaust ports and see if any of the fluid leaks past the valves.

The method above with oil should work too.

i knew how to test it thank you but there was alot of smoke i mean alot and if it is bent its a very small leak the cometic was already on it do this normally fail? Also what kind of leak is acceptable because itl be awhile befor i can afford a new set of valves iv been laid off

Well just a few days ago my oil catch can froze it didn't allow my engine to breathe built up crank pressure and blew my cam seals and possibly oil seals I'm still checking it out just to make sure but I drove the car 5 miles and had to add 2 quarts of oil so you shouldn't of jumped the gun and pulled the head off but good luck with it let us know what the turn out is

thanks guys i figured out that the owner before me installed a cometic without surfaceing the heads pretty warped
