well I am getting even more closer to removing the engine, except I am stuck with the stupid knuckle..I removed the bolts on the top the passangerside bolt was a 19mm and the driverside was a 17mm does this sound right? are they suppose to be two diffrent sizes? and my question is do I need a special tool or somthing for dropping the knuckle down because it doesn't want to budge..~Dustin

so I can get the axles out...I thought you had to remove drop the kuckle down to pull it out of the tranny..right?

I also found out that I needed a balljoint fork to get it to drop..but now I am stuck again trying to get the stupid axle out of the tranny..in the haynes manual it says to pry the axle from the tranny with a pry bar?

The way I remove my axles is to unbolt the shock at the bottom (two long bolts). That will allow the hub and control arm to drop down for room to pull the axle.
For the passenger side I use a fat screw driver that I ground down so the angle is not as sharp( / \ ) and wedge it between the tranny and the axle and give a quick love tap with a hammer. It "should" pop it right out. Just be carefull not to tear the seal while doing this. Good luck.

so do you just yank on the axle? on the driver side? because I started off by doing that by reaching way in and pulling on it..but it didnt work..but in the manual it says to pry it with a prybar but I cannot see how they get one up there..is a pretty tight spot

Drivers side there is a bracket that mounts underneth your a/c compresser with 2 bolts that is attached to that axle. Remove the bolts and it just pulls right out of the tranny. There is a c-clip on the end of the passenger side axle. Thats the side that needs a pry bar or similer.

stop messing with the ball joint..

instead pull the two bolts holding the strut in. remove the caliper, remove the rotor, pull the axel out of the hub assembly, pop the axel out of the tranny with a crow bar and slide the son biotch out. simple. i pulled my engine in 2 hrs from drive in until the engine and tranny r layin on da floor

ya I think I overlooked that bracket I will get that out of the way and then pry the passanger side axle as for the balljoints..I already popped them about 2 hours ago and the axle is already out of the hub..I would have done it the other way if I had known but oh well..thanks for the help guys

Uhhhh, why on earth would you remove the caliper and rotor?? Just unbolt the knuckle from the strut (2 17mm bolts), then unbolt 2 14mm bolts from the block that hold a carrier bearing, which holds the axle into the tranny. Unbolt those, slide axle out. Pass. side, just unbolt 2 strut bolts, unbolt that gusset (triangular looking thing under the car w/5 bolts), and pry the axle out of the tranny with a long screwdriver or prybar. Absolutely no reason to mess with any brake components.

the reason i said that is because when you remove the rotor it gives you more clearence to pull the axel out. i didnt realize he was working on a awd. point is he got it out. but because pickle forks have a tendency of thrashing the ball joint your going to propally have to replace them.

ya I noticed later in other posts that pickle forks can damage the ball joints..but I plan on replacing them anyway..I will be pulling those axles out hopefully this weekend...thanks again
