Well I'm gonna end up having to drop the tranny in a month so in the mean time I've been reading the manual and searching on a good clutch setup. I'm gonna get the SBE kevlar disc with a act 2600 pressure plate, good choice for a 400 whp car no?

I'm a former fwd owner and haven't dealt with transfer cases. Is it difficult to remove it from the driveshaft? I see in the manual and vfaq that the transfer case is mounted with 5 bolts and you remove those, but how does it slide off of the driveshaft?

Skipping to the end, how do I drop the tranny correctly after everything is disassembled? Just lower the jack? Or do I have to move the tranny somehow towards the passenger wheel to clear?

Also, manual says to place a block of wood and a jack under the oil pan to counter weight, where exactly do I put this wood? I'm sure not on the pan itself. Any other suggestions of things I should replace while I got it apart let me know. yes I'm gonna buy a new oem throw out bearing too. I read 90 transmissions are pretty weak so lmk what to do to beef it up.

The transfer case will just slide off of the drive shaft. Once you have it unbolted pull it to the driver side so it's not connected to the transmission and then just slide it towards the front of the car. Be careful the driveshaft will fall some and might hit you.

With the transmission you will have to slide it towards the passenger side when you are finally getting it off. The input shaft needs room to drop down. If you just try to drop it straight down the input shaft will hold it up.

Actually yes the wood does go on the pan that's why you use wood because it's softer than metal and shouldn't dent your oil pan.

That's the part I don't get, and it's mainly because I don't have the experience. But how exactly do I slide the trasmission over? Is it really that easy to move once everything is d/c?

Seriously?

Yes, it is that easy. You might need to use a pry bar between the egine and transmission to start. But that is it.

I'm not sure why the VFAQs say you have to support the engine with a wooden block because the 3 remaining mounts should have no problem supporting the engine, assuming you've got a jack under the trans after you take the trans mount off.

The transmission needs to move away from the engine block about an inch and half before it can be dropped, basically just enough to see the clutch and flywheel assembly. I didn't have to use a pry bar, but I did have to wiggle the trans a bit to get it to back off.

The VFAQ is actually a pretty darn good guide; saved me a ton of time and extra work, so I would suggest giving it a read through.

Got it, thanks everyone. Any suggestions on what to do to beefen up my 90 tranny? I hear the synchrose are single, etc.

I plan on replacing all the seals- rear main seal, transfer case, etc.
