im putting in a carbon fiber hatch and dont want to pay some windshield repair guys to swap out the glass. seems simple but i dont want to mess it up. anyone have any easy tricks to do this?

When you take the glass out, there is a possibility that it may crack because it is old. I suggest that you take it to a glass shop, so you don't get hurt. I paid $125 to have a glass shop to replace the rubber trim and reseal a leak that I had on the hatch glass.
