Has anyone ever cut open a 1g bov?

I ask because I TIG weld, and I'm wondering why I can't just cut the top cap off, add another spring to the diaphragm and weld the top back on. I might have to do just a little at a time and sit it in water or something to keep from melting whatever material seals it, but if that's it I'm very interested vs just crushing it.

Opinions? Anyone got a old one collecting dust to donate cheap? I'll document the process and post a wright up if it's successful. I'd rather not use my 1 and only recirculation valve.

My thought is this would keep the operation as factory but then should hold more boost. Only concern is melting something that shouldn't be ugh melted.

Increasing the spring pressure does nothing to help the valve stay closed under boost...re-routing the quick-release feature to an external location and letting it vent does, however.

The spring pressure relates to the amount of vacuum the engine draws. The valve is designed with a large diaphragm in the upper chamber along with a spring....under vacuum the spring's purpose is to regulate when and how far the valve opens, under boost the spring basically does nothing as the boost entering the upper chamber is the same as the pressure the valve is holding within the piping. So as long as the diaphragm is sized correctly in that it allows enough air pressure to fill the chamber and hold the valve shut, then it's doing it's job.

Adding springs is just going to upset the balance of when the valve opens and for how long to the point that it could potentially damage the turbo if you're not letting it do it's job. It's best to just do the Dodge Garage Mod to an uncrushed 1G valve and leave it alone. :)

If thats accurate then how does crushing a 1g valve help it to hold more boost? It increases preload from the spring correct?

Btw not fully understanding this is why I'm going to just retrofit a evo IX/X recirculation valve to the car. I understand how to do the dodge garage mod, and why it works, but you lose the quick open function. Tools or understanding aren't stopping me from modifying it like others have. I was wanting to modify it I thought to be more like the evo unit. But without having both in front of me and a caliper it's hard to know what's different about the evo unit. Smaller piston maybe? Different area within the chambers of the diaphram? I'm just going to order the evo unit off eBay and see for myself but was trying to figure out a way I could save funds for other parts without changing the way the recirculation valve operates

By offsetting the balance between the upper chamber and middle chamber and interrupting the quick-release function's ability to force the valve open under high boost. Yes you are increasing the spring pressure, but you're increasing it to effect how the quick release function works and not how much boost the valve holds as a whole....eventually you'll reach a point where the boost pressure will once again overcome the spring pressure via the quick-release function. Likewise- if you take a crushed valve and disable the quick release feature it's basically scrap because it absolutely won't open under light load at all.

Well I ordered and have an Evo IX unit in route to me so the 1g unit will probably find a new home in the parts room.

BUT now understanding what your saying about volume of the chambers, it makes me wonder how hard it would be to modify. I may try.
