Hi,

Recently, when driving on the freeway and I try to acclerate, my car RPM just goes up very fast, without any true acceleration and I feel like it can't reach high speeds readily. When I do mash the pedal to keep up with traffic, or merge, the RPM surges up quickly, but my speedometer slowly follows. This RPM surge is not normal, furthermore, I feel like I'm losing power. I don't want to/ can't really, go over 65 mph. This just started about 3.5 weeks ago.

I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, PCV valve/ hoses, checked the ignition coil. with no luck.

However, my car is leaking oil in the back of the block.

I am aabout to change the fuel filter, as others say that may be the culprit in my loss of power.

Lastly, the CEL threw out the codes P0442- EVAP System Leak Detected. P1486 EVAP Leak Monitor Pinch Hose Found. which I tried to fix, but was unsuccessful. I dunno if this can contribute to the problem. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

PS. I have about 120,000 miles on my car.:dsm:

Thanks.

How's your clutch? Is it slipping? Have you checked cylinder compression? Just a few things to think about. How about brakes? Are they locked closed? Maybe one of them. I can't really think why this would happen. The Evap code... could it be a symptom of a O2 sensor failure? -Tom

sounds like you have oil on your clutch,
its not blown or burnt out its just slipping like crazy?

Are you saying maybe somehow oil leaked into where my clutch is and is causing it not to catch? since I bought the car at 68,000 miles, i have never changed the clutch... but as far was going into the gears, it seems fine, no gears are stuck. so how do you know when your clutch is gone? THanks.

You described a toasted clutch in your description of the problem. Engine revving while in gear, with little response. Those are the warning signs.

Dont go too long or you will ruin the pressure plate and flywheel.

i did some more searching... and you might be right, my clutch is going bad. But is it hard and expensive to change it? Also, how much would it be if i brought it to a shop vs doing it myself? any special tools if i do it myself? Lastly, which clutch do you guys recommend? thanks again.

Not sure about the changing, but you can pick up an act 2600 street kit for around $400 at some places, and having one myself, they are amazing. Can launch at 5500 with an awd every time, and it catches no problem. Good for daily driving as well.

first off i would find out were that leak is and fix it fast i had the exact same problem and i rode on my clutch for a week. When i took it off the fly wheel had a 1.2mm dip in it and the flywheel and pressure plate were blue from the heat that was created

so i guess all the symptoms point to a clutch that's dying...so, i guess the next step is to change it. What do you guys think is a reasonable price if I bring it to a shop? $400-500?

I just went to the a shop and the quoted me about $700 to do it, but I am thinking about doing it myself. I saw a link http://www.vfaq.com/mods/clutch-2G.html but does anyone know if the 1995 Eclipse GSX with cruise control, ABS will require the same procedure for a 1997 RS N/T?

What kind of clutch do you guys recommend?

THanks.

The 2600 is definitely overkill for a N/T car.

$700 is not unreasonable for the clutch replacement.

You can probably just go with an OEM replacement clutch. Your flywheel will need to be resurfaced as well. A performance clutch would be a waste of money, because you really don't need it, and you're not making the power to justify it.

$700 is more on the expensive end of the "price quote spectrum", I would shop around a little more, It could save you a couple hundred dollars. I've had a clutch job done for $300, and another one for $350 from reputable shops. Then again, you are living in Gayville, and things are probably double the normal price anyways.
