ok so ive read all the other pages on this. it goes in far enough to catch the gears on the tranny and i thought i had it in so i put it all back together and with the car still in the air i put it in gear and bam it slipped right back out. so after taking it apart again and getting it where i had it i climbed under the car and realize its not all the way in. ive got another right next to it for reference. the car is a 92 N/T

Solution
ok so i figured it out after pulling a different one out of my parts car. the axle that was in the car had broken off where the snap ring goes thanks anyways though. does anyone know where i could get a new ring? i asked my local parts store and they said i would just have to order a new axle
I agree it should just slide in with little effort. You might just need a new snap ring. Some times they get bent up if pulled in and out a few times.
