Resolved GVR4 FWD axle same as AWD in front?

I WAS HOPING that you wouldn't say that!
hopefully somone here has actually tried it. the only reason i need to do it, is that my gvr4 needs a new axle and i have a fwd axle that needs a rebuild. rather than just let the gvr4 sit wh ile it's axle gets rebuilt, i could have the fwd done and then just swap it in.

Measure the two to compare length.....

THat's what i'm try8ing to avoid. I'd rather not pull the gvr4 axle, measure it, then put it back in. i might have to though if nobody knows. i don't do the work at home, i do it at my work on a lift, which means i can't leave the car overnight while the axle gets rebuilt. that's why i was hopoing to just do a swap while the extra axle gets rebuilt.

they are a different size. it will not work, they are the same length and the shaft that goes into the hub is the same but the splines that go into the tranny are smaller in diameter.
It will not let it seal and you will leak tranny fluid.

axles have different part#s
tranny seals have different part numbers

there is a way around this, it can work, but it is not worth it for the pass side but it is great for the driverside

if you are interested in the parts or a complete kit to do the swap email me.

WELL, it sounds like you know this firsthand. thanks for the info. i guess i'll just pull the axle at home then and drive the talon to work for a couple days.
thanks again.

I need your help. I did a swap 1g to a 2g. The axle on the driver side did not fit. I bought a 95 gst axle the spline that goes into the tranny were too small. Does anyone know if the size and leght changed between 95 to 98. If anyone has ever did a swap have this problem please help me out. BTW this is my first DSM I bought it from a friend it needed a motor Ive always wanted one now I have one but it's a PITA doing the swap almost done though hope the wait is worth it. Sorry to get off the subject. Please help me.. Thanks in advance. :dsm: :dsm:

The part numbers are different for fwd and awd cars, and the length of them is different very slightly according to the dsm manual (too small of a diff to tell by eye) however I am running a remanned passenger side half shaft that used to be on my fwd nt laser on my awd car for about 5k miles now and it does not leak and hasn't come out. Spline count was the same.

Of course, as always, YMMV...

This post has 2G guys telling a 1G guy that axle part numbers are different between FWD's and AWD's.

Well, I beg to differ.

The numbers are different for the 2G DSM's, but not all 1G's. (There is an exception after 92 FWD)

I just purchased a new "AWD" pass. axle from AutoZone, and received the same axle (and part number) as the extra axle sitting in my garage, left over from a FWD I would have loved to use. All though, I was not inclined to do so, because of this misinforming thread post!!

TO HELP THE NEXT SUCKER THAT COMES ACROSS THIS THREAD THAT WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE WHAT HE READS HERE, I WILL SAY THIS:

90-92ish 1G FWD AND 1G AWD DSM's, have the same part numbers at most auto parts stores (7934 & 7935)

AND IF "I" DON'T RETURN TO THIS THREAD AND DELETE MY PREVIOUS STATEMENT, YOU CAN TAKE IT TO MEAN, I'M CURRENTLY DRIVING MY 90 GSX WITH A 90 FWD - PASSENGER SIDE, FRONT AXLE INSTALLED. AND IT IS WORKING JUST FINE.

all I can say is, if you have a doubt about the length or whatever.. just pull out the axle... have you ever pulled one? I can pull one in less that 10 minutes.. its VEERRRRYYY simple
