well I cooked my oil feed line & thought i pulled over fast enough to not cause any damage (lost damn near the whole engine worth of oil), i repaired the line & put a ton of heat sheilding on yesterday

then today i finaly put DSMlink in & went for a test drive, car felt real good (when we corrected for the GM MAFT)

all of a sudden the turbo stopped spooling, & i was mad tyte Honda boy with my NA motor, it gave me one short burst of boost then stopped spooling all together,.. WTF

i went home & poped the hood thinking the wastegate was stuck open, i tapped it with a hammer a few times to see if that was the case & was using anti lag to try and spool the turbo in my driveway, all of a sudden i'm pooring smoke out the tail pipe

so my 1,200 dollar turbo is toast. anyone know who or if i can get this rebuilt?

I'd like to get this stupid car back together & have some fun with it ! :thumb:

turbochargers.com said that Garret is holding back inventory to drive the price up on these center cartridges & doesn't sell parts to repair them. but for ONLY 900 dollars i can get the one they have in stock... and have my housings machined to fit it etc.. so for 1,100 dollars my 1,200 dollar turbo will be repaired!

YAY!

Anyone wana buy a low mile 99 GSX? This may be the straw that breaks my friggin patience with DSMs

Ok first off are you running the Gm Maft blow thru or draw thru? If its blow thru you may want to check all your Intercooler piping. If not, take off the intake and check for shaft play. Did you prime the turbo before starting it?

its blow through, i checked all my IC pipes when it stopped spooling, everything looked good, i couldn't hear anything though..

the turbo has been on the car for about 200 miles & working good untill this weekend when i melted the oil feed line & had to repair it.

Check the shaft, you may have to take it off and seperate the chra and check it out for yourself before spending 1100 on a rebuild. Also, check with Sbr, they should be able to do something for you on the turbo. WTF

I'll start pulling stuff off tonight :( don't know what i can do, i'll just take the turbo out & pull it apart & look at it, scratch my head & call SBR tomrrow (they said to call so i can talk to a manager)

I've always had good dealings with SBR, i bought my 2.3 built motor from them & a whole bunch of other crap. hopfuly they can do something for me :dsm:

Cant say i am a big fan of Sbr, but hopefully you dont get the shaft. Also, did you check out and see if it has oil in the engine, or any shaft play?

it went south during a "quick lunch tune session" with one of the DSMLINK guru's from up here.. so i parked it and went back to work, i'll check tonight for shaft play / oil in the intake etc...

looks like about 1/4 inch shaft play, the intake side isn't hitting the compresser & i would assume neither is the exhaust side, but the nut on the compresser wheel was finger tight,

do they make the bearings out of glass?! Garrets own web site says that these turbo's are more resistant to low oil conditions :(

gonna take a brake from it for a bit before i start swinging a tire iron at the engine

If its finger tight you have a problem. I believe the torque spec is 5-7 Nt. You should send that back to slowboy with a request for them to warrenty or check it out. And i am sure once they send it out to get it checked you will have your answer.

How did you melt the feed line? Are you using their feed line kit feeding from the head? My gt12 is still sitting on my desk and the shaft nut is definitely more than finger tight. Post back with SBR's response, I'm curious as to how they handle this situation. Good luck.

pulled the turbo off, the shaft is BROKEN in half. the compresser side has a bit of play, but the exhaust side ROFL it would fall out if the wheel was smaller.....

I'll post updates as more info arises.

wow, i am ready to go purchase one of those right away now. :nono: .Let us know how they handle it. WTF

For the short period of time that the turbo was working fine, how was spool on it? I'm conisidering buying this turbo, but because my car is automatic, quick spool is necessary. By the way, doesn't SBR offer some type of warranty on the turbo?

it wasn't that it spooled sooner, but when it started spooling my turbo STOMPED my buddys 50 trim on "spool up time" (the time it takes from when you start to spool, to when you hit full boost)

when i was in the RPM range that spooled the turbo it felt almost like a supercharger. :thumb:

its definatly an awsome turbo, i just wish Garret wasn't being such a dick about manufacturing these things. .they are intentionaly driving up the price because they are currently the only center cartrige producers

Don't believe everything you hear. There might be some other shops that have the parts.

Oh, I defiantly agree, i didn't get many calls placed yesterday, & all this information is based off an SBR sales rep & a guy at turbochargers.com who "graciously" offered to repair my 1,200 dollar turbo for 1,100 dollars.

I will be calling around more today. you would think that at LEAST the parts i DO have that are good (compressor and exhaust housings) would save me something on price (over the fore mentioned 100 dollars)

I contacted my insurance company, the car was recently in an accident ( http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174836 ) & its quite possible that this is related. so i'm bringing my car downto the body shop on monday for them to look at the turbo & a couple of other accident related issues. gonna hold of on my repair calls untill i find out what they want to do.

I shot Mike @ SBR a quick email describing my situation & he wants to take a look at the turbo (said he never heard of it happening before)
