Hey guys, I'm looking for a daily grinder........I'm getting out of the dsm thing. Any opinions about the good ol' 420a ?? I'm NOT looking for speed...........But I would still like something a lil fun to drive. What could you compare it too? Interga? Civic? Focus?

The only mods I would do are the obvious, intake, exhaust.....and the other misc. stuff.

Let me know how you like them!!

Thanks for the space -Kyle

uh....... the 420a is still a dsm. i liked mine when it was stock. it was fun to drive and looked good. the 420a is a good motor. takes a na beating and keeps on ticking.(lifter tick that is) i think the 2g eclipse is one of the nicest looking cars made. get one.

I agree, they are pretty solid cars. Great looking, and fairly reliable if un-modded. Plus it has untapped potential.

Get one. Basic maintenance to make sure it's solid, then install a GST catback ($100), eBay short ram intake w/ a K&N ($100) and UDP ($150) before KYB GR2 struts ($200) and Eibach Prokits ($200) and you have a nice daily driver that will look good moving or parked, handle tighter, give you a little more zip than stock, while reliably giving you 27-25mpg average. That's less than a grand for a nice, sporty (not fast) ride. Pick up a set of generic wheels and tires from Wheelmax for $700 and you're still out the door with a sweet little daily that has less than $1500 in mods.

I've owned mine for over nine years now. She's showing her age, but still my favorite car to drive. :thumb:

Great posts guys, thanks so much for the replies.

As far as speed goes...what could you compare it too? I know it's not a fast car, my 92 was a fast car (see mods list) But i was curious what it performed like?

NOTE: Would an lsd insert give me more traction for daily driving??? I'm not going to put down any more power than basic bolt ons, but the roads here are slippery and was wondering how one would do in a daily driver??

Thanks for the replies guys, this has the potential of being a very informative thread:rocks:

I've had wheel hop in my GS, but then again i dont think i have ever red lined it.

Gas guzzler. Mine gets 40.

My Gs is extremley reliable, and still has enough power to pass people on the highway if you need to. Mileage wise its great!

LOL.

I can get 500 miles on a single tank of gas. How 'bout them apples?

Coming back from MOD in California last April, I did 120 from Phoenix to Palm Springs with the AC on and got 200 miles on the first quarter of a tank, 300 by the halfway mark and I was in the OC at that point and had to slow down.

This is on a fully built, untuned 420A.

As for the LSD, they are a wish list item. ERT offers a retrofit for around $400, but stay away from the NuSkool LSD. It's a tiome bomb. I'd pass on it until you've had the car a bit and know how it handles. You might not decide you need it.

How fast are they? Fastest all motor 2GNT right now runs a 15 flat. Other guys with more experience and basic bolt ons have run lower 15s, but that's the cream of the crop right there. On the street, you're going to be decently quick, but it's not a race car. I remember I held with a V8 Durango one time with I/H/E.

They are nice cars and, although not very fast, still fun to drive.

Great guys, thanks for the replies:thumb:

I'm getting a pretty heavily modded 95 gs-t, and i'm going to take it down to a dealer and try and do a trade:p

That gas mileage is wicked!!!

How about traction in the rain?? Like starting on a steep hill?? Thats really the only reason why I was considering the lsd..........

Would better shocks upfront and poly mounts help traction on a fwd??

Thanks for the space- Kyle

The wife drives the GS with no problems, and shes not the best driver in the world.

well who didnt see that coming? ROFL

Cool, Well now I need someone to buy my built 92 talon.:thumb:

Anyone looking for a 20g awd 1g? Super clean with only 109k

I only want 5500.

Pm me if interested!!!!!!!!

Speed wise, I'd compare the car to a B18C LS integra, Except the integra is lighter, but the 420a comes with an extra .2 Liters.

Traction will improve with a front polyurathen insert, and lowered suspension. Don't forget the upper strut bar as well. (ebay on the strut bar)

Make sure its a 5spd, as an RS/GS automatic will feel incrediably slow compared to what your used too, as with a 5spd you can at least downshift on the freeways.

When you do lower it, go with actual springs, not some ebay coilovers. Your ride will still feel nice. A short shifter will make it feel a lot better to drive as well.

I want to get a 99 GSX for my daily driver.... haha, I'm goin against the flow!

I want an unmodded 99 GSX... then I'll put an exhaust and BOV and call it good....*COUGH* yeah right... if I ever get another car that I could mod... I'd be in trouble.... I better start looking for a buick

Well just to compare to other cars. If you get the exhaust and cold air its solid 16's sec. car. I ran a 16.1 with only these mods. It well still beat most Honda's and hang with the best stock civic made the SI. This would be a good race if both cars have the same mods. A KA powered 240sx is another good line up. And there are many other cars that you could still race and be comparable to. But be sure you look under the hood of this RS before you challenge.

I luv my 2G 420a as much as my old 1G TSi AWD even if its slower. Atleast its alot nicer, solid, reliable, and I can actually drive it more than 96% of the time compare to the old 1G turbo DSM.

2G GS makes nice daily drivers.

Did both your cars run an 11.98 ???:shhh:

Probably not:p

No but he said daily driver and I can't help but remember this quote from somewhere it was. (Its not what you buy, its what you build) meanning you don't get the probs for having a fast car if you didn't build it. So why would I buy a car thats ragged out when I can just do that myself.OMG

i drive my gs every day, and wouldnt trade the car for anything.... its awesome the car is fun to drive and looks amazing.. definatly buy one

Get the GS (or RS). I own a 97 RS (modded), 96 GST Spyder (heavily modded) and a 94 TSI AWD (modded). By far my slowest and favorite car is the RS. VERY dependable, comfortable, relatively good on gas and you can make them quick enough to have some fun. I would say the mods the DR listed are an excellent start.

I love my GS. It’s not the fastest thing in the world, but it still has some guts. I have some 225 tires and it sticks to the road well and is a blast on the backcountry roads. I can really appreciate the handling this thing has. I guess you could say the gs is almost the total package. If it had, oh i say 30-40 more whp, it would be the perfect car, from my POV.

BTW, what did you buy kgtalon95?

LOL, well I eneded up selling the talon and bought a 98 cherokee:cry: It's cool, but boring to drive. I've been looking around for a nice clean gs........

So with all the basic bolt on's you guys make it sound like these cars are fun:thumb:

I'm excited to get out of my jeep and back into a dsm.........kinda:D
