Well, the tiny Odessy battery will no longer start my car. I do not really drive it enough for a dry cell battery. I purchased smaller battery (Group 51) to install. I have removed the battery tray and mount the battery on the subframe. The dry cell had lots of room but the group 51 battery is about 2/3 the size of the OEM battery.
Being the compulsive neat freak I am I spent a day thinking of a clean stock looking method to install the battery. I finally decided to use a modified battery box, charcoal can bracket and some metal strapping.
First, I cut the battery box to fit the smaller battery. I planned to hold the battery against the inner frame rail on the open side.
Second, how to make a secure mounting box for a battery. I decided to use the charcoal canister mouning bracket. I bored two holes in the box to tighten the bracket mounting bolts. I also turned the bracket upside down to match the angle the battery box is mounted to the frame rail.
Third, I used some sheet metal strapping to add rigidty to the cut box. Next I bolted the bracket, strap and box together.
Last, placed the box on the sub frame, bolted the bracket to the firewall and also put some large screws (from the headlight stripping on a 1Ga) into the subframe to add stability.
I wanted to make a quick battery hold down so I used a heavy rubber bungie strap. I bored a hole in the subframe for one end and put the other end in a battery tray mounting hole.
Later I am going to make a bolt in battery holder since the strap probably will not pass a tech inspection.
