I have a 96 non-turbow/turbo, a spec stage 2 clutch, this noise just started like a week ago, i was driving and i started hearing this noise everytime i let off the gas. It sounds like grinding gears almost, but im not grinding gears, cause it happens if i am at the top of 2nd and just let off the gas but dont put the clutch in. Im not sure what it is but it starts at around 2400rpm and doesnt end. Also a couple of weeks ago it started to pop out of 5th sometimes it only did it twice and has never done it again since then. So does anyone have any ideas, the clutch and thorwout bearing are only 3 months old. Also does anyone know how much a new tranny would cost?

One possibility-

A friend of mine had a similar problem in their GST. When the transmission was finally torn apart they discovered that the gears had dislodged out of place so badly that one was chewing a hole through the bellhousing, hence the grinding noise. The symptoms he had with his tranny were very similar to what you're experiencing. Even with the gears out of place the car was still driveable, but very finicky when going into 3rd gear. Only way you will really know is by breaking down the transmission and taking a look.

Yeah I do just need to tear it apart but i have no time now that school started again. So i think im just going to drop it off at my local cottman transmission guys and see what they can find, does anyboyd know where and how much a new tranny would be or if anybody makes a good upgraded racing tranny?

hi, im having the same problem, but im thinking its the bearings inside of the tranny. its getting louder and louder, but still grabs and shifts fine in all gears. if you find out what yours is please post back so i can think of what this is for sure.

thanx

I also have the same problem. It is like you said a gear grinding sound when slowing down. Mine started after I installed a new clutch and an alum. flywheel. I e-mailed the makers of my clucth and flywheel and they said that with an alum. fly. it is very common. They told me it was called gear chatter. I have been driving on it for 2k miles and no problems. My tranny oil is also fine, no metal in it. So it could be the flywheel causing it.

No i have the chatter too and i have a spec stage 2 clutch w/ steel flywheel. I guess its what we get for having racing clutches. But they should have finished pulling my tranny tonight so hopefully tomorrow i will get a call witht he problem and i will let everybody konw what it is, im also asking him to check the clutch assembly for any signs of warped flywheel or disc and try to get rid of this chatter cause its terrible shakes my whole exhaust.

Well I had my tranny shop tear it apart and they said it is perfect its even in good shape for how many miles are on it so im ####ing clueless and really pissed off because i dont have the time or money to deal with this right now. So anybody have any ideas what could make this noise from the motor it cant be a blown piston or rod cause it still has full power or feels liike it. Also under acceleration the noise is not there but as soon as i let off the gas its there and quite loud.

I've got a grinding on takeoff and in 2nd if I give it too much gas. My conclusion is that the tranny is seperating from the engine with the torque and causing some sort of malfunction with the clutch assembly. I know im missing one dowel pin. Im gonna try stick a bolt through there and see if that helps. Could your problem be the same?

hey guys-
i know this is kind of an old thread, but just to add....i am having a very similar problem with my 97 gs, but only when i start it when its cold/not been driven for several hours. at least i cant hear it while driving or at a stop light. the sound is that of grinding, but to compare the sound, it sounds like maybe a tensioner pulley going out or just a pulley going bad or something. i know it coming from the tranny area. if anyone can help, id appreciate it. Thanx
