on a 96 eclipse GS. Not my first eclipse, But it is my first one where i have some cash to put into it. I got a GSt engine lined up from a 95, but aside from the basic swap, what else will i need to change and upgrade? I was on another site, where all they said was go buy a GSX, and that I was getting in over my head so now im here looking for a straight forward answer. Who can help me out, and give some advice....

ecu. tranny. butt basically everything is reversed on a 420a engine so im not 100% sure. but its a lot of work. should have bought a gst or gsx. or u can boost that 420a

Hmmm, so would the GST engine swap be "easier"? What part of the tran's needs to be upgraded/replaced? The engine is coming out of a auto, and im not going to give up my 5 speed. Thanks for the straight answer, finally!

It sounds like you really don't know what to do.. so I would suggest u don't even try.. it would be too complicated and nor woth the 4g63 swap.. you would end up with a gst with all the money you spent you could have boosted. Your 420 and still have some money left over... wow sorry for the run on...

Yeah, Im starting to get that feeling, but im taking this as a learning curve to bigger and better things so to speak. Thanks DSMKauai, that site is what i was looking for!!!

I wouldn't reccomend doing a swap...all the money you would spend swapping you could sell you gs and get a gst or gsx and you wouldn't have to do a BUNCH of work...
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the GS have a non turbo 4g63 and the RS has the 420a??

Sell the GST motor and put the money towards upgrading the internals of the 420a and boost it. They can make pretty decent power. You can boost the stock 420a to 8 or 9psi, but it will eventually go boom.

GS RS and ESI all have the 420a motor.

There is a difference between year they where built, due to bearings.

example: 1995 to 1996 don't have notches on the block for the 1995 to 1996bearings.

1997 to 1999 has notches in pre cut from the factory,

Remember when rebuilding a 420A 1995 to 1996 make sure you double check your part numbers, that you are buying right bearing for your year of car.

If you don't you'll spun the bearings and have redone it over again.

yeah i would just say try to rebuild that engine. and boost it. to much involved in switching that around.

Yeah, your better off selling the N/A for a GS-T or GS-X. Or you could build up your 420A. I had one in High school, and they are fun. I was going to buy another GS, but i test drove a GS-T,and it was like night and day. I would either commit to the 420A or get a 4G63 and not dick around.

1. Your asking so you will most likely never get it done.

2. EVERYTHING HAS TO BE SWITCHED

That is trans, axles, engine, mounts, ecu, sensors, turbo, intercooler, battery tray, and wiring harness would make it immensely easier. Your gonna have to yank out the 420a, gut the engine bay, custom weld in the motor and trans mounts are not in the right place.

On top of that your gonna have switch the transaxle, I doubt it uses the same cv axles as the 420a trans, its on the opposite side as well, so your gonna have to switch the hubs most likely.

On and on and on. It might be cool to do it in a car that wasn't allready available with a 4g63T but, it would be CHEAPER, Easier, and quicker to sell your 420a and get a 2g turbo. Or a 1g turbo, or turbo the 420a.

Wow, you guys here are awesome! Thanks for all your input, and advice. The engine rip is going to start next week, and the turbo has been ordered.... Ill be sure to document, and post up the eventual product... Should be interisting

I applaud you for actually listening unlike most noobs to the forum. Good luck with your build

No, it's I who "applaud" the rest of you, who regardless of what I plan to do or how much knowledge I don't have, gave me straight answers.... :thumb:

Oh, and BTW, I am a noob, not to cars but to imports.....
