Here is the situation: 1990 Talon TSi
I had a blown headgasket. Water was going out my exhaust, no smoking, had to refill the radiator every so often though it was running good, you would even think it has a blown headgasket. Me and my friend took off the head, took it to get resurfaced, and put it back on the block with a new 4-layer metal HG. We torqued the ARP bolts by hand first and then 40lbs, 60lbs, and 80lbs of torque starting from the middle and going out to the ends. Like this:
8 6 1 3 9
10 4 2 5 7
Then after the head was in, my friend (who worked in a shop) install the timing belt, and I proceeded to installed everything else on the car without any troubles until we tried to turn it on. The car turn on but it sounded bad and within about 10 sec, the car would rev up to about 2500rpms and then die off.
We first thought it was the timing belt, so my friend did it all over again. After he did the timing belt again, the car was the same. Then I said that it might be a big vacuum leak since my boost gauge read only about 4-5 in vacuum instead of the 15-16 while idling. After about an hour of searching, we couldn't find a leak and I took the talon for a little test drive. The car ran ok but when I stepped on the gas, it would blow white smoke out the exhaust, the car would idle at about 1500rpms and the lifters ticked very loud. While the car was on I took the dipstick off and as soon as I did, you could hear a loud vacuum through the dipstick (it would suck in your thumb), then I was like OH NO!
I took the car to another friend's shop and did a compression test. Results were: 145-150-140-135. Did a leakage test and #1cyl had 25% leakage, #2cyl had 55% leakage, then we stopped and concluded that my piston rings were gone.
Now what i am trying to figure out is why is my car is smoking now that I changed the headgasket and not before when it was blown and water was going out the muffler??? The compression is not that bad but there is a huge amount of leakage???
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to start working on it until I know for sure that I would look for. Thanks.
